Welcome to Salary.com's Compensation and Pay Equity Law Review.

Our editor, employment lawyer Heather Bussing, is tracking legislation, cases, and analysis to give you the latest critical HR topics.

This week we're answering the questions:

  • Where do pay equity laws and anti-discrimination laws overlap?
  • How can you avoid sexual harassment claims?
  • Do you realize that nobody wants to go to the holiday party?
  • Why won't Chicago's new paid leave ordinance work as planned?
  • Where is the "worksite" for remote workers under WARN laws that apply to mass layoffs?
  • What is a sensible and wise approach to employee benefit contribution limits?

The whole men should make more because they're the breadwinner nonsense is still alive and well.
It's also illegal. We need to let that ish go.

For the holiday season and every other day too, here is some excellent advice from Robin Shea on how to avoid a sexual harassment claim. It boils down to keep sex and work separate, don't do and say things that suggest or imply sexual meaning, and keep your hands to yourself.

Chicago is not playing with its new paid leave ordinance. I am a huge proponent of paid sick leave because it encourages people to keep their germs to themselves, rest, and recover. Rest is medicine.
But when paid leave is required to be rolled over from year to year, there are no caps on accrual, and unused leave must be paid out at termination, it's a problem for everyone.

The Federal WARN Act and most of its state counterparts generally refer to the number of people being laid off at a "worksite." What does that mean when you have remote employees all over? Nobody knows. But here's how to think about it .

I do know people who really love thinking about saving money and taxes and do it frequently. They are sensible and wise about these things.
I'm mostly disinterested. I am sensible and wise about other things, like how to compose a photograph or deal with weasels. Thank goodness for great information like this about employee benefit contribution limits and how to manage them.
