Transportation Director directs, develops, and implements overall operations of a transportation network including safety, compliance, equipment, and staff. Develops and directs operational policies and procedures to ensure safety and efficiency in all transportation activities. Being a Transportation Director monitors transportation costs, service level agreements, and performance metrics to identify and resolve problems and achieve efficiencies. Partners with internal and external stakeholders to forecast and meet capacity needs. Additionally, Transportation Director oversees the acquisition and oversight of transportation providers. We are headquartered in Portland, Oregon and own/operate over 50 elevators and offices throughout WA, ID, MN, MT, NE and ND to support our domestic and export sales program.

    Position Description:

    The Director of Transportation & Logistics primary role is to ensure that Columbia Grain product moves from origin to our end customer at destination in a quick, safe, and cost-effective way. This role will oversee all rail, truck, barge, container, vessel and parcel transportation, freight trading and carrier contract negotiation, implementation, and process improvement. As the Director of Transportation & Logistics, you work on establishing and strengthen relationships with external partners such as truck, ocean, container, barge, rail, and air providers. Additionally, this role will partner with internal operations stakeholders such as, Accounting, Credit, and Commodity Merchants on supply chain specific decisions.  As a Director of Transportation & Logistics you will provide analysis and offer strategic solutions that you will then execute.  In this position, you must demonstrate strong leadership, and the ability to support your team, and drive success.

     

    Primary Duties and Responsibilities

    • Manage the efficient delivery of finished products.
    • Must be a hands-on leader, and have a strong ability to pivot from high-level, strategic tasks, to manual, and sometimes administrative tasks.
    • Coordinate effective use of carriers to meet both inbound and outbound capacity service, and least of cost objectives.
    • Lead all pricing negotiation and contract management efforts.
    • Analyze and incorporate appropriate technology to create transparency and efficiency in our freight processes.
    • Provide analysis and strategic direction in relation to all shipping information including net pricing and all accessorial charges, driving efficiency and cost reduction.
    • Create transportation capacity strategies and develop contingency plans to cost effectively support varying levels of company transactions and changes to supply/demand trends.
    • Build internal and external relationships.
    • Ensure adherence to all governmental policies.
    • Provide recommendations to senior leaderships on all aspects of transportation and logistics.
    • Collaborate with Trade Team, Accounting, IT, and Credit.
    • Report project plans, progress, and results.
    • Keep current on logistical technology advances and implement these as appropriate to continually improve our logistical processes and supply chain management.
    • Analyze and report macro-economic dynamics impacting global supply chain affecting product movement.
    • Manage relationships with 3PL and outsourced logistics providers including railways, trans loaders, and container lines.
    • Develop an understanding of customers' needs and take actions to ensure that such needs are met, including communication with international customer during their normal business hours.
    • Develop and implement technical project management tools such as schedule and compliance metrics.
    • Develop and maintain an expert level knowledge of AgTech (grain industry specific) ERP software.
    • Facilitate effective team communication between Logistics and Commercial departments.
    • Manage team activities by establishing task priorities, schedule, and track work assignments, provide guidance, and ensure the availability of resource.
    • Train and develop new employees.
    • Periodic travel will be a requirement of this position, up to 15%.

     

     

     

    Qualifications


    Skills, Knowledge, Education and Experience

    • Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Logistics or Operations Management, or equivalent with focus in relevant fields.
    • 10 years of relevant work experience.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Analytic and able to solve problems in a fast-paced environment.
    • Experience in Supply Chain, logistics, transportation, and/or Operations Management on a global level.
    • Ability to track multiple processes and communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
    • Outstanding organizational and coordination skills.
    • Ability to change manage.
    • Advanced skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint).
    • Working knowledge of global transportation systems.
