Transportation Director directs, develops, and implements overall operations of a transportation network including safety, compliance, equipment, and staff. Develops and directs operational policies and procedures to ensure safety and efficiency in all transportation activities. Being a Transportation Director monitors transportation costs, service level agreements, and performance metrics to identify and resolve problems and achieve efficiencies. Partners with internal and external stakeholders to forecast and meet capacity needs. Additionally, Transportation Director oversees the acquisition and oversight of transportation providers. Requires a bachelor's degree in logistics, transportation, supply chain management, or equivalent. Typically reports to top management. The Transportation Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be a Transportation Director typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments.     Department Statement

    Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Emergency Management, Campus Safety, and Environmental Health and Safety and working closely with colleagues within the Dean of the College Division and partnering with other Divisions around campus, the Director of Transportation is responsible for directing and supervising the transportation operations at Colgate University by managing staff and drivers to maintain the University vehicle fleet and transportation schedules.

    Accountabilities

    The director is responsible for overseeing all transportation-related operations within the institution. This role involves strategic planning, managing transportation resources, ensuring compliance with safety regulations, enhancing the overall transportation experience for the campus community, and ensuring the efficient and safe transportation of students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

    The director provides regular training and guidance to staff and maintains detailed records of vehicle repair records.

    Responsibilities Include:

    • Supervise vehicle fleet operations for the University; maintain University-owned vehicles; including buses, vans, etc.
    • Oversee travel logistics and manage a team of drivers
    • Hire and supervise service providers to ensure optimum vehicle performance
    • Coordinate service schedule using ridership data and student feedback
    • Ensure the requisition of parts and supplies required for regular vehicle equipment maintenance; maintain records of maintenance work performed on each vehicle or equipment unit.
    • Ensure University compliance with all safety regulations and requirements as applicable.
    • Maintained detailed financial records to ensure responsible and efficient use of the allotted department funds, including records of fuel, oil, engine coolant, and other vehicle supplies used.
    • Operate equipment as needed.
    • Provide off-campus pick-ups as needed.
    • Ensure that all vehicles that travel off-campus are registered and inspected per New Your State and Federal guidelines and best practices.
    • Other duties as assigned by the Associate Vice President of Emergency Management, Campus Safety, and Environmental Health.

    Requirements

    Professional Experience/ Qualifications

    • Minimum of 10 years of experience in transportation management, preferably in a higher education or a large institutional setting.
    • CDL C license with P Endorsement and clean driving record
    • Strong leadership skills with a proven track record of successfully managing transportation operations and teams.
    • In-depth knowledge of transportation regulations, safety and compliance standards, and emerging trends in the transportation industry.
    • Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills for collaborating with various stakeholders. Strong problem-solving skills.
    • Proficiency in budget management, data analysis, and familiarity with transportation software/systems.
    • Demonstrated effectively leading and inspiring teams.
    • As a designated “essential employee,” must remain on duty beyond normal shift or report to duty without advance notice; must be able to work any time of day, day of the week, and holiday. Ability to work a rotating schedule.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Familiarity with environmental sustainability practices in transportation is advantageous.

    Education

    A Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Transportation Management, or related field is strongly preferred, but not required.

    Certifications

    A current valid driver’s license, in accordance with the University’s Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle Use Policy is required.

    Physical Requirements

    Must be able to comply with NYS DMV CDL requirements.
