Respiratory Therapy Director directs the programs and staff of the respiratory therapy department. Oversees the provision of diagnostic, treatment, and educational services for patients with respiratory disorders. Being a Respiratory Therapy Director develops and implements respiratory care services in accordance with the policies of the hospital and the directives of the medical staff. Monitors patient progress and treatment plans. Additionally, Respiratory Therapy Director manages departmental budgets and reports, and maintains department records and statistics. Requires an advanced degree. Typically reports to top management. Requires Registered Respiratory Therapist. The Respiratory Therapy Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments.   • Responsibilities

    • Perform respiratory therapy assessments: Conduct comprehensive assessments of patients' respiratory conditions, including evaluating their medical histories, performing physical examinations, and conducting diagnostic tests as necessary.
    • Develop and implement treatment plans: Collaborate with physicians and other healthcare professionals to develop individualized treatment plans based on patient needs. Administer respiratory therapy treatments and interventions, such as oxygen therapy, aerosol medication delivery, chest physiotherapy, and mechanical ventilation.
    • Monitor and evaluate patient progress: Regularly monitor and evaluate patients' respiratory status, response to treatment, and overall progress. Adjust treatment plans as needed to optimize patient outcomes.
    • Educate and counsel patients: Provide education and counseling to patients and their families regarding respiratory care, disease management, and lifestyle modifications. Ensure patients understand their conditions, medications, and self-care techniques.
    • Respond to emergencies: Be prepared to respond to respiratory emergencies, including providing immediate life-saving interventions, such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), airway management, and emergency ventilation.
    • Maintain accurate documentation: Record and maintain accurate patient records, including assessment findings, treatments administered, patient responses, and progress notes. Adhere to all relevant legal, ethical, and regulatory guidelines.
    • Collaborate with healthcare team: Work closely with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure coordinated and comprehensive patient care. Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings and provide valuable insights and recommendations.
    • Stay updated with advancements: Stay abreast of current trends, research, and developments in respiratory therapy. Pursue continuing education opportunities to enhance knowledge and skills, maintaining professional licensure and certifications.
    • Ensure patient safety and infection control: Follow infection control protocols, maintain a safe environment, and adhere to all safety standards to minimize the risk of infection and ensure patient safety.

    Requirements

    • Education and certification: Possess a degree in Respiratory Therapy from an accredited program. Must hold a valid Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) or an equivalent certification.
    • State licensure: Hold an active and unrestricted Respiratory Therapist license in the state(s) where practicing. Familiarity with state-specific regulations and requirements is essential.
    • Experience: Previous experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist is preferred, but exceptional new graduates may be considered. Experience in critical care settings, neonatology, and pulmonary function testing is advantageous.
    • Technical skills: Proficient in operating and troubleshooting respiratory therapy equipment, such as mechanical ventilators, oxygen delivery devices, and aerosol therapy devices. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems is desirable.
    • Interpersonal skills: Possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with patients, their families, and healthcare professionals. Demonstrated empathy, patience, and compassion are vital.
    • Critical thinking and problem-solving: Exhibit strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities to assess complex respiratory conditions, develop appropriate treatment plans, and respond effectively to emergencies.
