    RESEARCH FELLOW

    LOCATION: KANSAS CITY, MO

Term: 90 to 120 days. June 2024 through September 2024 (with the possibility of an extension into the fall months)

Work Schedule: Monday to Friday 9 AM to 5 PM with flexibility to work outside of these hours as the project demands.

    Pay: $ 20.00 per hour

    JOB PURPOSE:

The Research Fellow position will be responsible for researching artists for inclusion in the Missouri Remembers: Artist in Missouri through 1951 portal. For the second phase of the project, Missouri’s Native American Artists, researchers will work closely with an advisory panel and library staff to identify, research, and write entries on Native American artists for publication in Missouri Remembers.

The Missouri Remembers portal launched in 2021. The goal of the first phase of the project was to develop a portal that was accessible to a variety of users, including researchers and students, which would share the impact of the arts on Missouri’s cultural heritage - especially by uncovering the stories of women, outsider artists, and artists of color. The second phase, will focus on the inclusion of Native American artists with verifiable connections to tribal communities.

In partnerships with an advisory panel, project partners, will hire and train research fellows to utilize a variety of sources and research skills to discover and document verifiable Native Artists who are descended from the original tribes of the Missouri region and who have shaped and been shaped by the state’s history. Native peoples from any tribe living in Missouri prior to 1951, as well as Native peoples whose tribes have historic lands in the Missouri area, but due to exile were forced to live outside of Missouri, qualify for inclusion in the portal. The portal mainly focuses on visual artists practicing before 1951 and includes many types of art like jewelry, painting, pottery and more. The project will begin this May - August 2024 with the possibility of some hours being available during Fall 2024.

Missouri is landlocked and borders eight different states as does its neighbor, Tennessee. No state in the U.S. touches more than eight. Missouri is bounded by Iowa on the north; by Illinois, Kentucky, and Tennessee across the Mississippi River on the east; on the south by Arkansas; and by Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska (the last across the Missouri River) on the west. Whereas the northern and southern boundaries are straight lines, the Missouri Bootheel protrudes southerly into Arkansas. The two largest rivers are the Mississippi (which defines the eastern boundary of the state) and the Misso...
