Refinery Operator controls equipment systems that process natural gas or petroleum into specified products. Responsibilities include monitoring pressure and flow and reading gauges and adjusting valves as needed. Being a Refinery Operator requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Refinery Operator works under moderate supervision. Gaining or has attained full proficiency in a specific area of discipline. The Process Operator, Billings Refinery will work independently and with other personnel to maintain and operate equipment and processes in the refinery.
Some of the processes involved use hazardous and volatile materials under high temperature and pressure. Typical working conditions include : outside weather and elements, blowing air, heat, noise, vibration and occasionally working from heights and confined spaces.
Operators must follow safe work practices including the wearing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). In addition, Operators perform various duties required to keep their assigned processing unit / area operating safely and at specified production / run rates.

The hourly rate for this position is determined by the Collective Bargaining Agreement. The starting hourly rate in the pay progression is currently $39.04.

The Billings Refinery is located in Billings, Montana. Its facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units.
The refinery processes a mixture of Canadian heavy, high-sulfur crude oil delivered by pipeline, and domestic crude oil delivered by truck.
With the startup of a new vacuum distillation unit in 2017, the refinery has 100 percent heavy crude processing capability.
The refinery produces a high percentage of transportation fuels and petroleum coke. Finished petroleum products are distributed by pipeline, rail car and truck.
Pipelines transport most of the refined products to markets in Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Utah, Colorado and Washington.
