Recreational Therapist jobs in New Jersey
Recreational Therapist plans and directs medically approved therapeutic recreational programs for patients. Organizes activities according to patients' capabilities, needs, and interests. Being a Recreational Therapist conducts programs including symptom management, basic conversation skills, community re-entry, sports, gardening, dramatics, music, social activities, and arts and crafts. Prepares reports for patients' physicians describing individual patient symptoms and reactions to therapeutic programs. Additionally, Recreational Therapist conducts activity therapy assessment of a patient's strengths and needs, and recommends therapeutic activity. Documents progress on each patient. Requires a license/certification to practice from the National Council of Therapeutic Recreation Specialists. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager. Requires to practice from the National Council of Therapeutic Recreation Specialists. Recreational Therapist's years of experience requirement may be unspecified. Essential Functions- Utilizes music, art, and dance activities to assist patients in meeting their treatment goals.
- Documents patient’s progress on treatment goals and maintains accurate records.
- Assesses reports from the psychiatrist, nurses, social workers, and others on the Treatment team to determine a patient’s functioning level.
- Actively engages patients during treatment sessions.
- Coordinates care interventions with other members of the treatment team.
- Helps patients reduce depression, stress, and anxiety during their hospital stay.
- Communicates effectively with patients, family, treatment team members.
- Designs life skill programs, leisure activities, and individualized programs that meet patients’ recovery needs.
- Active participant in treatment team meetings.
- Participates in all regulatory processes as directed.

Minimum Education/Certifications
Bachelor's degree or higher. Licensure as a certified recreational therapist
Minimum Work Experience
One year of experience preferred.
