    JOB SUMMARY

    Under the direction of the Recreation Director, the Recreation Coordinator – Camps and Classes coordinates community recreation programs. Work includes the planning, organizing, and directing of recreation programs, camps, and classes; ensures program safety and supervises related personnel. This position also collaborates in developing marketing/advertising material for the programs. The position requires continual interaction with the public, other City departments, and various program stakeholders. Position responsibilities have potential safety implications.

    JOB FUNCTION

    Essential Job Functions

    Plans, supervises, and manages recreation programs, camps, and classes; recruits, selects, and trains volunteers; coordinates activities; creates camps and classes schedules; coordinates instructors; addresses and resolves problems and complaints.
    Assesses event needs, obtains quotes/proposals, and drafts proposed contract for consideration of Recreation Director and approval by City Council.
    Works closely with City staff to coordinate the scheduling of Recreation facilities for programs, camps, and classes.
    Works closely with local schools and other facility owners to negotiate available space for programs, camps, and classes and creates schedules of use.
    Responsible for the safety and oversight of minors participating in camps, classes, and field trips.
    Purchases necessary supplies and equipment in accordance with City purchasing policies.
    Collaborates with the Public Information Officer on the marketing and promotion of City events.
    Plans, coordinates, and assigns the work of part time and seasonal staff and volunteers. Coordinates training, development, and implementation of programming for seasonal staff.
    Ensures safety measures are in place for volunteers, coordinates background checks in accordance with established policies.
    Assists with coordination of community wide program sponsorship/fundraising activities to support and expand programs, camps, and classes; represents the department at camps and classes-related community meetings and events.
    Coordinates and creates publicity for recreation activities to generate active interest and participation in programs, camps, and classes.
    Performs inspections of recreational facilities; checks operation, condition, safety, and security of equipment and facilities; coordinates maintenance and repair of equipment and facilities with City staff.
    Assists Director with the development of budgets for all programs. Ensures planning and alignment of activities comply with budget constraints.
    Communicates with staff to ensure that program guidelines and rules are followed.
    Maintains detailed records of work performed, resources, and volunteer hours reporting, in accordance with records retention policy.
    Sets up tables, equipment, and seating for programs, camps, and classes.
    Monitors the performance of instructors and class requirements to ensure adherence to the contract.
    Assists in the coordination of administrative policies regarding recreation program registration and recreation program instructor procedures.
    Coordinates summer recreation camps for children; implements activities, field trips, transportation, food items, and guest speakers. Records and maintains supply inventory.
    Prepares reports and presentations as needed.
    Serves as a departmental lead, providing mentoring and guidance; may delegate and oversee work processes.
    Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies, procedures, and safety practices.

    ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

    Provides administrative back up, answering and directing incoming calls, assisting with registration, and general assistance as needed.
    Attends Board and Commission meetings when necessary.
    Performs other duties as assigned.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

    Required

    Knowledge of public administration principles, project management techniques and methods, and safety procedures and practices.

    Knowledge of budgeting principles and practices and contract management.
    Knowledge of, or ability to learn, applicable city, state, and federal laws, codes, ordinances, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
    Superior customer service and excellent interpersonal skills.

    Knowledgeable in the practices of employee supervision, including training staff in work procedures, and work planning, assignment, and assessment.
    Must have excellent time-management and organizational skills.

    Ability to plan and coordinate diverse sports programs.
    Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
    Ability to operate office equipment and computer programs. Specific skill in use of MS Office Suite, particularly: Word, Outlook, and Excel, and recreation-specific software.
    Able to prioritize a variety of projects concurrently.
    Knowledge of first aid principles and skill in their application.
    Conflict resolution and problem-solving skills.
    Proficient in both writing and editing with strong attention to detail.
    Ability to make decisions under pressure, deal with public in a manner that represents mature judgment, manage stress, and handle multiple priorities.
    Demonstrated skills using oral and written communication in the performance of duties, including internal and public presentations.
    Ability to present information in a group setting in an interactive manner.
    Ability to apply tact and good judgment.
    Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, officials, and co-workers.

    Preferred

    Knowledge of marketing and promotion techniques.

    Ability to drive a vehicle with trailer attached.

    QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION

    Minimum

    High school diploma or equivalent.
    Minimum three (3) years of experience working with youth and/or adult activities or educational programming.
    Or any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the equivalent necessary for satisfactory job performance.
    Legally authorized to work in the US.

    Preferred

    Bachelor’s degree and course work in recreation services, education, child development, or a related field.

    LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION

    Required

    Obtain First Aid, AED, and CPR Certification within six (6) months of employment.
    Possess and maintain a valid Idaho Driver’s License and proof of valid insurance.

    Preferred

    Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP).

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    Ability to walk and kneel for extended periods of time.
    Enough stamina to perform duties for at least four hours at a time.
    Ability to see, with or without corrective lenses, well enough to read standard text.
    Ability to hear, with or without hearing support devices, well enough to converse on the telephone.
    Ability to speak well enough to verbally converse with others, especially on the telephone.
    Sufficient manual dexterity to write and operate office machines.

    WORK SCHEDULE

    This job typically requires the employee to work weekdays (Monday – Friday).
    This job requires the employee to work a varied schedule, including days, evenings, and weekends (Saturday and Sunday) during seasons when camps and classes are held, and overtime hours.
    The position schedule is subject to change at any time at the discretion of management.
