    The Washington State Ferry (WSF) system is essential to Washington's transportation network, linking communities on both sides of Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands. There are over 400 sailings each day on 10 ferry routes. WSF transports nearly 17 million passengers a year and has more than 1,800 employees. Employees perform a variety of duties on vessels, in terminals, at the maintenance facility, and at the Seattle headquarters.

    The Opportunity
    WSDOT is currently seeking two Field Inspectors for the Washington State Ferries terminal construction and/or maintenance projects. This position is responsible for a variety of inspections of various marine structures, buildings, pavement, and electrical and/or mechanical systems. In addition, this position ensures compliance with the contract and permit conditions, monitoring contractor schedules, communicating with operational staff as needed, and completing related documentation as required.

    What to Expect
    Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you/the Field Inspector will:


    • Observe, document, and inspect all aspects of work performed by a contractor for public works construction projects.
    • Monitor contractor’s schedules, prepare bid item pay notes, document completed work, and other contract documentation.
    • Ensure compliance with contract and permit conditions.
    • Document force account work and repair projects and provide emergency response,
    • Write inspector’s daily reports documenting contract work.
    • Coordinate with ferry operations staff and contractors to maintain scheduled ferry service during construction projects.
    • Communicate project-related issues between construction and WSF/WSDOT staff.

    Qualifications
    To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
    • Two (2) years of experience as Technical Engineer 1, Transportation Technician 3, Bridge Engineer 1, or equivalent.
    OR
    • Bachelor’s degree with a major study in civil engineering, construction management, or a related field.
    • One (1) year of related work experience as a Transportation Engineer 1, Transportation Technician 3, Bridge Engineer 1, or equivalent.
    OR
    • Master’s degree with a major study in civil engineering construction management, or a related field.
    AND
    • The ability to obtain/maintain a Washington state boater education card within 6 months of employment.
    • The ability to obtain/maintain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC) within 6 months of employment.
    • The ability to obtain/maintain a driver’s license valid in Washington State.
    • The ability to become qualified to sample and test grout within 6 months of employment.
    • The ability to become qualified to sample and test Portland cement concrete within 6 months of employment.
    • The ability to become qualified to sample and test aggregates within 6 months of employment.
    • The ability to become qualified as a WSDOT General Inspector Certification within 6 months of employment.
    • The ability to obtain required materials testing certifications within 6 months of employment.
    • The ability to become qualified to perform hot mix asphalt plant inspection.
    • The ability to become qualified to perform in-place density testing.
    • The ability to maintain required certifications.
    It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
    • Certification as an Engineer-In-Training.
    • One (1) year of experience on a survey party.
    • One (1) year as a design team member.
    • Two (2) years of experience as Technical Engineer 1, Transportation Technician 3, Bridge Engineer 1, or equivalent.

    • The salary listed includes the legislative-approved 5% salary premium for positions with an assigned duty station in King County.
    • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
