Professor - Sociology teaches courses in the discipline area of sociology. Develops and designs curriculum plans to foster student learning, stimulate class discussions, and ensures student engagement. Being a Professor - Sociology provides tutoring and academic counseling to students, maintains classes related records, and assesses student coursework. Collaborates and supports colleagues regarding research interests and co-curricular activities. Additionally, Professor - Sociology typically reports to a department head. Requires a PhD or terminal degree appropriate to the field. Has considerable experience and is qualified to teach at undergraduate and graduate levels and initiates research and case studies in field of interest and may publish findings in trade journals or textbooks. Provides intellectual leadership and has made significant contributions to the field. May offer independent study opportunities and mentoring to students. Shenandoah University is a comprehensive private institution located in the historic and scenic Shenandoah Valley in Winchester, Virginia, approximately 70 miles northwest of Washington, D.C. The position is full-time and will start in August 2023; an on-campus, in-person presence is expected.

    Responsibilities

    Candidates will be required to teach a broad range of undergraduate courses in sociology, from introductory to upper-level courses, including interdisciplinary studies, and provide academic advising to sociology students. We are specifically interested in finding a dynamic and collaborative faculty member who will re-envision what sociology means within a diverse college of Arts and Sciences.

    Required Skills

    Required Qualifications:

    A doctoral degree in sociology or a closely related terminal degree by the start of the Fall 2024 semester, demonstrated excellence in teaching, evidence of scholarly and professional activities, and experience teaching undergraduate courses.

    Preferred Qualifications

    We invite applications for a faculty position in Sociology centered on the experiences, struggles, and contributions of marginalized communities broadly speaking. The ideal candidate will have research or teaching experience in one or more of the following themes: social inequality and justice, public health, environmental justice, rural sociology, and sexuality and gender studies. Preference will be given to individuals who utilize an inter and/or multidisciplinary approach.
