    Position Summary

    The Assistant Professor of English in Composition and Rhetoric will work in the Department of English within the College of Arts & Sciences. The Assistant Professor Writing Specialist will have a 12-hr. teaching load each semester, determined by the Department Chair and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. The Writing Specialist load will be 3 sections of instruction to include Academic Writing courses (First-Year Composition) and/or upper-level writing courses such as Advanced Writing or Technical Writing as needed; the fourth-part of the load each semester will be in collaboration with Student Support Services to provide vision, tutor training, and guidance for the university Writing Center and serve as the Director of the University’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP, WE Write! focused on improving writing) in coordination with the Office of Institutional Effectiveness for data collection, faculty communication, training, and assessment.

    As the departmental Comp-Rhet specialist, the assistant professor will provide professional guidance and pedagogical grounding in writing studies within the collaborative setting of the department and will engage in professional, university, and community service consistent with the University Mission.

    Teaching experience, commitment to excellence, innovation in undergraduate teaching, and an appreciation for the broad intellectual community of an excellent liberal arts education are required. Experience in working in or administering a writing center, or work in writing center pedagogy and practice, as well as writing program assessment is a plus. Experience working with English as second language or English as Foreign Language or interest in developing such interest also a plus.

    Essential Duties And Responsibilities

    • Provide expertise for the department as the primary Composition-Rhetoric specialist and work with colleagues to shape the Academic Writing program for the General Core Curriculum.
    • Ability to demonstrate quality teaching in first-year composition face-to-face is required, experience with online modality a plus.
    • Proven ability to communicate Comp/Rhet pedagogy to those outside of the specialty and demonstrate knowledge of Writing in the Disciplines and interdisciplinary writing practices.
    • Perform departmental assessment for SACSCOC; Serve as the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP, WE Write!) Director - work with Institutional Effectiveness to assess and provide leadership for this on-going QEP.
    • Work with the Office of Student Support Services in the discipline-specific training of Writing Coaches for the Writing Center. (SSS oversees hiring, onboarding and other HR tasks, while the Comp-Rhet professor provides vision and training for the Writing Center and acts as liaison for the English department, as well as fulfilling some working hours as appropriate in the Writing Center).
    • Develop and implement curriculum, inclusive of departmental learning objectives, for in-person instruction; develop and manage course materials.
    • Evaluate student work, administer tests, assignments and other exercises that permit measurement of knowledge, abilities, and/or performance relative to the course learning objectives.
    • Support student accommodations outlined by Office of Student Success, Disability Services
    • Complete student record keeping in a timely and accurate manner, including grades and attendance.
    • Follow guidelines for each course provided by department; use syllabi and policy templates; update and revise in collaboration with departmental colleagues.
    • Post grades as required by Registrar following procedures and policies; administer final exams according to university guidelines.
    • Maintain timely communications with students and staff at all times and in accordance with FERPA.
    • Interact with students in a positive manner, listen effectively, field questions pertaining to subject matter.
    • Participate in departmental, faculty and staff meetings.
    • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor at all times.
    • Uphold and abide by Campbell University policies and procedures, including, but not limited to; Title IX, and Information Security, FERPA, and other state and federal regulations.
    • Other duties, responsibilities and activities as assigned.

    Education/Experience

    • Ph.d. in English, Composition and Rhetoric or a related field. ABD in final stages of completion considered.
    • Demonstrated teaching experience in university academic writing required
    • Experience working in or administering a writing center, or work in writing center pedagogy and practice, as well as writing program assessment
    • English as second language/ English as foreign language of additional interest.

    Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

    • Ability to teach and lead in writing practices in a rapidly changing writing environment.
    • Ability to communicate effectively to colleagues outside of specialization and collaborate effectively.
    • Strong computer skills and the ability to learn, utilize, or adapt to new and emerging technology, including awareness of the pros and cons of AI, such ChatGPT.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Outlook, and common methods of digital communication including web/text/chat platforms.
    • Commitment to professional development and engagement in the field of Rhetoric and Composition
    • Knowledge of Blackboard Ultra Learning Management System or ability to learn Blackboard.
    • Ability to adapt to changing student needs.
    • Demonstrate tact, a positive attitude, courtesy, and discretion in dealing with, faculty, staff, students, university officials and the public.
    • Exercise independent judgement and maintain strict confidentiality as necessary.
    • Ability to work independently as well as function effectively in a team and within a diverse group of people.
