Polysomnographic Technician under the direction of a physician, administers various sleep studies in order to diagnose the type and extent of sleep disorders. Performs routine patient assessments, scores sleep records, documents other test results, and collects and transmits biological specimens for analysis. Being a Polysomnographic Technician typically requires an associate degree or its equivalent and certification as a Polysomnographic Technician. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager.     Job Summary

    This position performs basic polysomnographic testing procedures as well as setting up and initiating sleep related therapies, to include home sleep testing, actigraphy and other remote study technology. Testing modalities include but are not limited to: PSG's (polysomnograms), pneumocardiograms, MSLT (multiple sleep latency tests), MWT (multiple wakefullness tests), and home sleep testing. This position acts independently to perform polysomnographic procedures in accordance with the physician's order and departmental policy. All team members are expected to be knowledgeable and compliant with Prisma Health's values of compassion, dignity, integrity, and teamwork. This position is primarily responsible for the scoring of all sleep study procedures as well as any complimentary patient education.

    Accountabilities

    • Performs and scores sleep study procedures, to include home sleep testing, in accordance with physician's order, departmental policy and Medical Director's guidelines. - 50%

    • Troubleshoot and repairs equipment within realm of knowledge. - 10%

    • Communicates often with supervisor and manager regarding patient, equipment, and other issues. - 5%

    • Obtains all required patient information and consent prior to performing sleep studies.\u00A0 Is responsible for documentation of patient education for home sleep studies. - 5%\u00A0

    • Initiates, monitors and performs quality (artifact free) sleep studies. - 5%

    • Adheres to department time and attendance standards and infection control practices. - 5%

    • Clinical leader in areas assigned, assisting and educating respiratory therapists, technicians, and other personnel in understanding the treatment and care of patients.\u00A0 Assists with employee education and orientation of new employees and serves as a preceptor for students. - 5%

    • Scores sleep studies in accordance with AASM Scoring Guidelines and meets average scoring volume requirements. - 5%

    • Meets Inter-scorer reliability goals established by the Medical Director. - 5%

    • Performs other duties as needed. - 5%

    Supervisory/Management Responsibilities

    This is a non-management job that will report to a supervisor, manager, director or executive.

    Minimum Requirements

    • Associate's Degree - Graduate of a school for Respiratory Therapy approved by the American Medical Association or a successor accrediting authority possessing CRT-SDS OR RRT-SDS by NBRC OR possess RPSGT credential by BRPT.\u00A0

    • 2 years - polysomnographic Technologist required

    In Lieu Of The Minimum Requirements Listed Above

    In lieu of Associate Degree, would accept 10 years of experience in sleep medicine and/or respiratory care. \u200B

    Required Certifications/Registrations/Licenses

    • Licensed as a Respiratory Care Practitioner in South Carolina and CRT-SDS OR RRT-SDS credentialed by NBRC OR RPSGT credentialed by BRPT.\u00A0 NBRC and/or BRPT credentials must be maintained.\u00A0 IF employee is not a licensed Respiratory Care Practicioner in SC, a current Exemption status to start PAP or oxygen must be obtained through the SC Board for Respiratory Care.\u00A0

    • Credentialed RPSGT must possess an applicable Speciality Credential, to include:\u00A0 CRT or RRT, along with required state licensure.\u00A0 Associate or Bachelor Degree accepted in lieu of Specialty Credential for current credentialed RPSGT.\u00A0 \u00A0

    • Current membership with AARC OR other job related professional membership required.

    • BLS

    Other Required Skills and Experience

    • Must possess skills necessary to treat patients of all ages to include infants, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.\u00A0

    • Must be computer literate with complete working knowledge of Microsoft Office Word and Windows.\u00A0

    • Above average clinical and interpersonal skills.
