Physician Assistant - Medical assesses, plans, and provides patient care under the supervision of a physician. Examines patient, performs comprehensive physical examinations, and compiles patient medical data, including health history and results of physical examination. Being a Physician Assistant - Medical orders and interprets appropriate laboratory and radiographic tests. Participates in daily patient rounds, writes progress notes, conducts patient education, writes prescriptions, and prepares discharge summaries. Additionally, Physician Assistant - Medical requires completion of the PANCE exam administered by National Commission of the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). Requires a master's degree of Health Sciences for Physician Assistants or related. Typically reports to a physician. Requires Certified Physician Assistant (PA-C). Requires State license to practice.     Qualifications

    To be eligible to request clinical privileges for Physician Assistant in general surgery, a practitioner must meet the following minimum criteria:

  • Documentation of master’s Degree in a health related or science field (or hold a temporary license from the MS State Board of Medical Licensure and enrolled in a Masters’ Degree program to be completed within one year, which has been approved by the MSBML)
  • Documentation that the applicant has graduated from a physician assistant program approved by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP)
  • Documentation of current certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)) or in process to take the examination
  • Hold a current license to practice in the State of Mississippi issued by the Mississippi State Board of Medical Licensure
  • Employment by or agreement with a physician(s) currently appointment to the active medical staff of South Central Regional Medical Center to supervise the PA applicant. According to the agreement, the physician must:
  • Assume responsibility for supervision or monitoring of the PA’s practice as stated in the protocol or hospital criteria governing PA’s
  • Be continuously available or provide an alternate to provide consultation when requested and to intervene when necessary:
    • New graduate physician assistants and all physician assistants newly practicing in Mississippi require on-site presence of the physician for 120 days
    • Provide adequate means for communication with the PA
    • On a least a monthly basis, conduct a review of the records/charts of at least 10% of the patients treated by the PA selected on a random basis according to State Licensure Board requirements
    • Continuing Education: Each licensed physician assistant must complete 100 hours of CME every two years, which is required to maintain national certification. The courses must be approved by the AAPA, AAFP, or organizations accredited by the Accreditation Council on Continuing Education.

    Core services to be performed by the physician assistant in the

    Medical Practice Of The Supervising Physician(s)

    • Initial & ongoing assessment of patients’ medical, physical, & psychosocial status
    • Obtain a chief complaint & relevant medical history
    • Perform a physical examination
    • Order & interpret appropriate diagnostic tests
    • Order & interpret appropriate laboratory studies
    • Formulate & institute a care plan
    • Provide patient education
    • Patient follow up
    • Make appropriate referrals to other health professionals & community agencies
    • Perform hospital rounds
    • Record progress notes
    • Arrange hospital admissions & discharge planning
    • Dictate history & physical examinations, consultations, & discharge summaries

    Core procedures to be performed by the physician assistant in the medical practice of the supervising physician(s):

    • Suture simple wounds (no vascular or nerve injuries)
    • Suture removal
    • Incision & drainage
    • Insertion & removal of IV’s, foley catheters, nasogastric tubes
    • Medication injections
    • Biopsy and/or removal of superficial skin lesions
    • Administration of local anesthesia
    • Removal of drains, G-tubes, J-tubes, PICC lines
    • Wound care & debridement

    Special procedures which require documentation of additional training or experience and under the direct supervision of the supervising physician(s):

    First assist or second assist in general surgery and be expected to close incisions

    Write orders for medications, treatments, tests, IV fluids, etc., to be countersigned by the supervising physician within 24 hours (?)

    Prescribe medication (with DEA & MSMBL approval) for all non-controlled medications and controlled medications within Schedules II, III, IV, V
