Pathology Assistant under the supervision of a pathologist assists with preparing and dissecting surgical specimens. Prepares and selects tissue samples for analysis. Being a Pathology Assistant may record findings or sterilize equipment. Requires a bachelor's/master's degree from an accredited program. Additionally, Pathology Assistant may require certification as a pathologist assistant. Typically reports to a pathologist. To be a Pathology Assistant typically requires 2 to 4 years of related experience. Gains exposure to some of the complex tasks within the job function. Job Requirements
Minimum Education: Completion of one of the following:- Associate's degree program in Biology or Chemistry
- Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnology program
- Associate's degree with 12 semester hours of biology or chemistry
Required Licenses / Certifications: Current BLS certification within 60 days of hire.
Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities: Knowledgeable in the handling of specimens from accessioning to final specimen storage. Working knowledge of laboratory organization, operational procedures, quality control and assurance and laboratory safety. Ability to read and write English. Understand and carry out written instructions. Ability to work with figures being able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Have the ability to get along well with others, especially under stressful conditions. Ability to work with hazardous chemicals.
Essential Functions
Performs patient accessioning. Describe gross features of surgical specimens. Performs grossing (examination and dissection) tissue specimens under the direction of the pathologist. Photographs gross specimens as needed. Obtains samples for special studies such as flow cytometry, cytogenetics, electron microscopy, immunofluorescence, etc. Ensures specimen integrity upon arrival and throughout the entire process. Dictates a gross description for each biopsy specimen, dissect and prepare tissue for cassettes. Is familiar with safety procedures and standard operating procedures.
