Park Naturalist plans, develops, and conducts programs to inform the public of historical, natural, and scientific features concerning national, state, or local parks. May require a bachelor's degree and 2-4 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Being a Park Naturalist is familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.     Vacancy Information

    Currently there is one (1) vacancy in the Community Recreation Services Bureau. This position is required to work nights, holidays, weekends, including Saturday and Sunday (Work schedule is Tuesday through Saturday). Will be required to serve as back up support and work special events. Must be willing to work in an outdoor environment.

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

    Under general supervision, plans, organizes, develops, and provides environmental and historical education and activity programs to the public and schools; maintains, preserves, and restores the natural and historical environments at the City's Nature Center and El Dorado Regional Park; develops and implements programs to promote interest in the study and appreciation of nature, and conservation. leads educational walks on the Nature Center trails; plans and prepares permanent and temporary exhibits; delivers lectures and arranges for guest lectures; supervises and trains volunteers and staff; writes education and promotional materials, including publicity releases, articles, brochures, manuals, and other related written materials for publication; performs and assists in the preservation, and maintenance of the nature center facilities and regional park; maintains records and prepares activity reports; develops program budgets and monitors expenditures; reconcile accounts and makes deposits; research history and preservation, conservation and natural resources; researches grant availability and develops funding proposals; assists with research, design, acquisition, and development of open space areas; monitors grants and revenue generating activities; performs other related duties as required.

    Requirements To File

    Candidates MUST meet both A and B requirements:

    Graduation with a four-year degree in the Natural Sciences, Outdoor Recreation or a related field with specific coursework in botany, biology, zoology, wildlife management, forestry, conservation and education (proof required)*.

    AND

    One year of experience in the operation and development of a nature center, nature museum, park, forest or outdoor recreation area.

    Opportunites For Substitution Of Education Or Experience

    Experience offering specific and substantial preparation for the duties of the position may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

    • Proof of required documents, such as degree or transcripts, must be uploaded to the online application at the time of filing. Degrees must indicate the field of study and transcripts must indicate a field of study and degree conferred date. Candidates who possess degrees from colleges or universities outside the United States must attach proof of educational equivalence at the time of filing.

    Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

    • Knowledge of recreational programs, services, facilities and equipment.
    • Supervise and train staff and volunteers, assist in planning activities;
    • Ability to maintain program activities and prepare and direct interpretive educational programs;
    • Ability to deal effectively with the public, follow directions, and effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
    • Ability to effectively operate personal computers.
    • Ability to work with a diverse community.
    • Ability to work in outdoor environment.
    • Ability to serve as a backup and perform duties assigned to subordinate classifications when deemed necessary to continue operations.

    A valid driver's license and a current DMV record must be submitted to the hiring department at the time of selection.

    Willingness to work an irregular schedule including nights, holidays and weekends as needed.

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Bilingual (English/Spanish or English/Southeast Asian) skills are desirable for some positions; plant restoration experience and/or certification; certification from the National Association of Interpretation.

    Screening of applicants will be conducted on the basis of application and required supplemental application submitted. This selection procedure will be conducted using a continuous non-competitive process, which means applications are evaluated solely on training, experience, education, or certification. All applicants meeting the minimum qualifications will be placed on an eligible list. Applicants receiving Veteran’s Credit will be placed on the eligible list first and then in the order in which applications were filed. This is a continuous eligible list, which means eligible lists may be established periodically and may expire six months from their effective date. Applicants may apply only once during a four-month period. Applications received by June 07, 2024, will be placed on Test #01 established eligible list.
