MORTGAGE UNDERWRITER

  • Underwrite mortgage loan applications and evaluate loans in order to maximize organizational profit and minimize risk or loss while providing superior service to residential lending clients by performing the following duties.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following: (Other duties may be assigned)

    • Reviews residential loan application file to verify application data is complete and meets investor guidelines, underwriting philosophy, policy and procedures.
    • Maintain weekly and monthly reports as required by management.
    • Assess the overall risk and credit quality of loans based on transaction type, analysis of income, assets, credit and collateral.
    • Evaluate and verify information contained in the loan application.
    • Ensure that income verification and employment details regarding the applicant are accurate.
    • Verify loan-to-value ratios.
    • Ensure that the borrower has the ability to repay the loan.
    • If necessary, request additional information to support the file or to confirm information already in the file.
    • Ensure that the funds for closing are scrutinized very carefully.
    • Ensure that the appraisal valuation makes sense and that it will be accepted by the bank or investor
    • If necessary, rework the loan to new loan programs and terms.
    • Maintain knowledge of all documents used in the origination of FHA, VA and conventional loans. USDA experience a plus, but not required.
    • Consistently apply established procedures, including the use of checklists, loan systems, appraisal review software and fraud detection procedures.
    • Meet or exceed established turn time and productivity expectations for new files and resubmissions.
    • Proactively prioritize duties based upon volume of new files and conditions received.
    • Identify and promptly discuss other options available for loans that cannot be approved as submitted.
    • Proactively pursue alternative solutions on behalf of loans that are not able to proceed as requested.
    • Promptly deliver files to the appropriate loan processor or loan officer for further processing, if applicable.
    • Provide guidance, as needed, to the processor or loan officer when documentation provided does not satisfy conditions. Offer flexible alternatives.
    • Responsible for originating real estate mortgage loans in accordance with Great Plains Bank’s processes and product guidelines.
    • Responsible for complying with the Bank’s BSA/AML and OFAC Compliance and Consumer Compliance policies and procedures relevant to their responsibilities. If the employee is not certain of what the specific instance calls for, the employee will consult the respective policy and will contact their manager with additional questions.
    • All employees are required to attend training as required by GPNB as well as support the overall compliance program by complying with all laws, policies and procedures.

    Supervisory Responsibilities: This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

    Education and/or Experience: Associate's degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two year college or technical school; or six months to one year related experience and/or training: or equivalent combination of education and experience. Previous FHA, VA, USDA and Conventional underwriting experience required.

    Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

    Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent. To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft Internet Explorer and Microsoft Office software.

    Physical Demands: This position may require long periods of standing or sitting and may include long periods of typing and repetitive motion. Candidates must possess the ability to lift and carry cash drawers, coin bags, and boxes sometimes weighing as much as 25 pounds.     Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The environment would be consistent with a typical business office with moderate noise, services open to the public and the ability to work in a confined area typically indoors.
