IHRC, Inc. provides scientific, information management and administrative program support to various Centers, Institutes and Offices of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) under several contracts. The successful candidate will be a full-time employee of IHRC, Inc. and will be assigned to the Coronavirus and Respiratory Viruses Laboratory Branch (CRVLB), Coronavirus and Other Respiratory Viruses Division (CORVD), National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD), at the CDC, 1600 Clifton Road, Atlanta, GA, to provide scientific and technical support for the CRVLB.
SCOPE OF WORK
The Microbiologist will provide laboratory support services for CRVLB initiatives.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform independent laboratory research which will result in the development and application of advanced molecular techniques and high through sequencing analysis which will detect and characterize both known and novel emerging viruses
- Participates in designing new protocols, including analysis of scientific literature and protocols, testing new reagents and assays to develop and validate a suite of advanced molecular methods to provide comprehensive, pan-viral detection and genome sequencing capability
- Perform various molecular techniques to rapidly identify and characterize viral agents in support of outbreak investigation of both known and unknown viral etiology, human disease surveillance and etiology study, and zoonotic emerging disease surveillance study
- Provide laboratory testing support for ongoing SARS CoV 2 and MERS CoV investigation, and assist in SARS CoV 2 and MERS CoV genome characterization and analysis
- Work closely with bioinformaticians to provide data analysis to sequencing data generated from sequencing including Sanger sequencing, NGS, metagenomic sequencing and high through targeted genomic sequencing
- Calibrate and operate laboratory instruments that are necessary to independently perform tests, analyses and other procedures in conducting experiments and studies
- Prepare and deliver written and oral reports to a variety of individuals and groups in both informal and formal settings.
- Prepares results for publication in a variety of journals
- perform activities associated with lab safety, specimen and laboratory quality management system (QMS)
- provide training for new fellows and visitors as needed
Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
· PhD with prior training in Virology, Microbiology or Molecular Biology. Master in Virology, Microbiology or Molecular Biology with 2 or more years of laboratory experience in developing, validating, implementing PCR-, NGS-based and other molecular assays, good computer skills are important.
Required:
- At least 2 years laboratory experience in molecular microbiology methods with viruses
- Research experience involving preparation and handling of nucleic acid samples, PCR, NGS, and other standard laboratory molecular methods
- Knowledge of biosafety requirements for research being performed
- Superior organizational and project planning skills requiring minimal supervision
- Extensive knowledge of scientific and molecular microbiology principles and standard methods with viruses
- Demonstrated skills and experience writing project reports, research protocols and manuscripts
- Strong interpersonal skills required for team work and extensive interaction with people across CDC and with external partners
- Strong written and oral presentation skills
- Experience working with Microsoft Office, Word, Access, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Immunizations may be required
Desirable:
- Experience with sequence analysis from human disease outbreaks
- Experience with laboratory quality management systems (QMS)
- Experience with the development and use of next generation sequencing methods for DNA, RNA sequencing of viruses
- Demonstrated experience developing PCR and/or NGS based in vitro diagnostic assays with viruses
- Demonstrated ability to synthesize new ideas for project research
Language Skills:
- The candidate must possess excellent oral and written communication skills in English
