Supervision Received: Works under the general direction of and is responsible to the Customer Service Manager or designated representative and under the direct supervision of the Chief Meter Reader. Exercises independent judgment increasingly as indicated by performance of assigned duties.
General Purpose of the Position: The purpose of this position is to read water meters on an assigned route and record consumption.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
· Read water meters on an assigned route and record consumption.
· Inspect meters to check on leakage or other malfunctioning.
· Verify service addresses, meter numbers, and meter readings at the request of the Utility Billing Office.
· Make minor repairs to meters such as cleaning meter dials, replacing broken meter box tops and cleaning meter box of dirt and debris.
Skills and Physical Abilities Required:
· Working knowledge of the geographic layout of the City and ability to determine locations from a map.
· Working knowledge of water meters and meter reading.
· Some knowledge of utility billing system.
· Proficiency in business communications to include listening, exchanging of ideas, giving and receiving feedback, proper grammar usage, spelling, sentence construction, preparation of routine reports, forms, and correspondence.
· Ability to prepare records and reports.
· Ability to understand and carry out oral and written work orders.
· Ability to work overtime and/or be on call.
· Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
· This is medium work requiring the exertion of fifty (50) pounds of force occasionally and up to twenty (20) pounds of force frequently.
· Work requires considerable physical activity including walking, lifting, reaching, stooping, pulling, grasping, balancing, climbing, kneeling, standing, and crouching.
· Visual acuity is required to operate automotive equipment and inspect water meters.
· Incumbent is also required to hear sufficiently to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
· Manual dexterity is required to operate equipment in performance duties.
Computer Equipment and Software Requirements: Hand held meter reading input units.
Education and Experience Required: High school diploma or GED equivalent plus two (2) years of experience in clerical or manual work involving frequent contact with the public; or the equivalent in education, training, and experience which would provide the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities. Possession of and ability to maintain a valid Florida driver’s license is required. Possession of and ability to maintain a valid Florida driver’s license.
Environmental Conditions: Incumbent is subject to inside and outside activities with no effective protection from weather changes, noise, vibrations, job hazards, and atmospheric conditions.
