Mental Health Technician observes and assists assigned mental health patients and helps with daily living activities, therapeutic activities, and socialization. Responsible for the overall maintenance of a therapeutic environment in the psychiatric unit and to ensure the safety of patents and staff. Being a Mental Health Technician attends and participates in group therapy, in-service education, and staff meetings. Records information about patients including vital signs, weight, and demeanor. Additionally, Mental Health Technician may communicate with patients family as needed. Typically requires an associate degree or equivalent. Typically reports to a registered nurse (rn) or other supervisor. The Mental Health Technician works under moderate supervision. Provides quality direct patient care to the assigned population which includes but is not limited to maintenance of therapeutic milieu, provision of a safe and supportive environment while monitoring the basic physical, emotional and social needs. Serves as a role model for ethical behavior and promotes an awareness and understanding of positive ethical and moral principles consistent with the Mission, Vision and Values of Common Spirit.
What You'll Do:
Bachelors Degree or Mental Health Tech Certification from either American Medical Certification Association or National Career Certification Board. PRTF must be 21 years or older.
Must be listed on the Nurse Assistant Registry operated by the North
Dakota Department of Health at the time of hire or within 90 days of
employment.
Will obtain the following within six (6) months of employment:
-Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) Certification
-Mandatory Child Abuse Reporting – APS- IA & NE
-First Aid – PRTF only
Certification as a Mental Health Technician if does not have Bachelors degree BLS or BLS instructor certification is required upon hire. Acceptable
credentialing bodies and certifications include the following:
American Red Cross: CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, American
Safety and Health Institute: CPR, PRO, must say “Professional Level
with AED”, and American Heart Association: Basic Life Support for
Healthcare Providers.
