Museum of the Rockies (MOR) is Montana’s most visited museum. In 2023, MOR served approximately 250,000 visitors and program participants. The museum has an ambitious strategic plan and is in the process of completing a master site plan that will help guide the museum over the next few decades. With vision and a record of success in a thriving community, MOR is poised for substantial growth and the leadership of a Director of Development who can work with the Executive Director, Board, University, staff, and community to achieve greater success.
The museum is a college-level division of Montana State University, an independent 501 © (3) organization, a Smithsonian Affiliate, an accredited AAM museum, and a repository for state and federal fossils. Located on a 34-acre museum site, it includes a 120,000-square-foot-facility, the state-of-the-art Taylor Planetarium, the 220 seat Hager Auditorium, Martin Children’s Discovery Center, and Living History Farm, along with an off-site 553-acre paleontology preserve.
MOR is located in Bozeman, MT, one of the country’s fastest growing and prosperous communities. Nestled into the Rocky Mountains, the community offers bountiful outdoor recreation activities along with a vibrant culture of good food, art, and music.
Duties and ResponsibilitiesFundraising
- Under the guidance of the Executive Director, implement a comprehensive development plan that effectively builds support through individuals, businesses, foundations, state, and federal outlets.
- Coordinate an active schedule of personal visits with both high-level donors and emerging prospects; Ensuring that the Executive Director, Board, and key personnel are engaged to build institutional and personal relationships.
- Manage, enhance, or establish annual fundraising events designed to secure financial support with the goal of meeting budget, expanding/diversifying income, and growing the museum’s donor base.
- Develop and implement annual and special appeals as needed, and under the leadership of the Executive Director and Board, help lead capital campaigns as needed.
- Effectively and productively work with the Executive Director, Director of Finance, Board, and staff in the cultivation and stewardship of major donors and prospects with leadership gift potential.
- Ensure comprehensive and timely communication with prospective and established donors.
- Oversee and procure the needed sponsorship for key events, exhibits, and other activities.
- Build a successful planned giving program to help address the long-range needs of the museum.
- With staff, maintain a grants calendar and tracking/reporting system that identifies sources, deadlines, contacts, and other pertinent information so that the museum can properly plan for and leverage these resources.
Membership
- Direct a large and complex membership program to ensure that membership in the museum continues to grow and engage a diverse segment of the museum’s local, state, and national community.
- Oversee membership calendar of events and acquisition to strengthen participation, expand households, and foster a logical path of members transitioning to donors.
- Implement with staff the Annual Museum Members Meeting.
- Ensure that the museum fulfills its many member benefits.
- Support the Executive Director in communicating and engaging members.
Management
- Direct the Development and Membership team, setting clear financials goals and strategies that meet the museum’s annual budgetary needs and that support its strategic plan and long-range objectives.
- Conduct ongoing evaluation of the Development and Membership Department’s strengths, weaknesses, structure, and staffing.
- Working with Development and Membership staff, create regular reports for the Executive Director, Board, and key committees that track progress towards goals.
- Effectively manage and organize the department’s day-to-day fundraising operations and budgets, using database and financial management systems to analyze progress against plans, to monitor expenses and cost-per-dollar-raised and to ensure security of all donor records taking into consideration cost/benefit, risk, mission fulfillment, logistics, and earned income projections, as appropriate.
- Work closely with staff in administrative and programmatic areas to help identify and support short- and long-range financial opportunities and needs.
Leadership
- Serve as a collegial and participatory member of the organization’s executive team. Engage in strategic decision-making, short/long-term strategic planning, and development and implementation of organizational strategies, policies, and practices.
- Foster an environment of cohesiveness and collaboration with colleagues across all museum departments; being conscientious of institutional deadlines, fostering strong communication, and striving for the general good of the organization.
- Reflect positive professionalism and a warm, can-do spirit that attracts people to the museum and demonstrates a commitment to customer service at all levels.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills- Bachelor Degree
- Five years of experience in increasingly responsible development positions with evidence of helping to build strong fundraising programs.
- Familiarity with areas of development, including capital campaigns, major and planned giving, digital/direct mail, membership, foundation and corporate fundraising, grant writing, event planning, prospect research and stewardship;
- Demonstrated experience with database systems and strong fiscal knowledge and data-analysis capability.
- Substantial experience related to nonprofit organizations.
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills- Progressively responsible background in fundraising for museums or similar educational institutions.
- Demonstrated track record of success building and growing a multi-faceted fundraising program to include identifying, cultivating and helping to solicit individual, foundation, and corporate donors.
- A track record of working effectively with Trustees — building strong relationships, inspiring them to action, providing detailed and effective support for fundraising activities and making the experience both satisfying and fun.

- The maturity, interpersonal skills, and warmth to work effectively with the Executive Director, Trustees, senior colleagues, staff, and donors, and to provide motivation at all levels throughout the organization.
- The energy, entrepreneurial drive, creativity, flexibility, results-orientation, and tolerance for ambiguity that is necessary to lead a complex organization to a significantly higher level of fundraising and programmatic success.
- A passion for embracing diversity, equity, and inclusion of all people at all levels in the institution and community.
- Excellent communication skills—both oral and written—with a reputation for building and maintaining relationships with people at all levels of an organization, across a diverse range of educational and social backgrounds.
- Proven analytical and strategic skills, with experience creating strategic fundraising plans, and the detail orientation and follow-through to implement those plans and to achieve or exceed goals.
- Ability to occasionally work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.
