Medical Technologist - Microbiology performs a variety of microbiological procedures in order to cultivate, isolate and identify microorganisms in skin scrapings, exudates, body fluids and surgical specimens. Conducts routine and specialized microbiological procedures, including virological, mycological, bacteriological, and parasitological assays for use in diagnosing and treating disease. Being a Medical Technologist - Microbiology verifies accuracy of findings, identifies test inconsistencies, and takes appropriate action to make corrections and resolve problems. Operates, cleans, and maintains laboratory equipment used in microbiological analysis and procedures. Additionally, Medical Technologist - Microbiology requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Typically requires an American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification or its equivalent. May require a state license to practice. The Laboratory is a C.A.P. accredited, full-service laboratory. The Lab is staffed 24 hours per day, seven days per week, by certified Medical Technologists, Medical Laboratory Technicisans, Secretaries, Lab Assistants, Phelbotomists, a Histotechnologist and a Transcriptionist. The Lab consists of the following departments: Transfusion Service, Chemistry, Hematology/Coagulation, Microbiology/Serology, Urinalysis and Phlebotomy, histology/Anatomic Pathology and suppertive services I(secretarial, office staff and assistants).
The Laboratory is a 24-hour-per-day, seven-day-per-week, on-demand service, with staff available in the department. The Lab processes 100-125 patients per day, serving physicians, SVHHA, Brattleboro Retreat, occupational Health, Nursing Homes and others. The Histology and Anatomic Laboratory is open 5 days a week and services Ambulatory Care, Surgical Services, Radiology and outpatient physician offices. Scope of service includes frozen sections, stereotactic breast biopsies, sentinel node biopsies and autopsies.
The MLT independently performs various qualitative, quantitative clinical laboratory testing and quality control in all section(s) of the laboratory: ie., microbiology, chemistry, blood bank, hematology, and phlebotomy/urinalysis. All activities performed are in accordance with established policies, procedures and standards. Tech must be a team player with good interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work in a fast paced, deadline oriented environment. The above level of knowledge, skills and abilities are normally acquired through the successful completion of an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in medical Laboratory technology or related science required and an ASCP, NCA or equivalent certification. laboratory computer knowledge and skills preferred.
