Laboratory Assistant performs research activities in a laboratory environment to aid in the planning, designing, and conducting of experiments. Collects, prepares, and tests samples and records measurements or observations. Being a Laboratory Assistant prepares reports detailing results and conclusions, applications, and methodology. Conducts routine maintenance and safety checks on lab equipment to ensure working order. Additionally, Laboratory Assistant assists with receipt and inspection of raw materials and the ordering and stocking of materials and equipment. May be responsible for cleaning, disinfecting, and maintaining cleanrooms and equipment. Typically requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager. The Laboratory Assistant work is closely managed. Works on projects/matters of limited complexity in a support role. To be a Laboratory Assistant typically requires 0-2 years of related experience. Savannah Technical College seeks a part-time, Professional Laboratory Assistant for the Welding program. The Professional Laboratory Assistant works under the direct supervision of faculty members and performs routine standardized laboratory work requiring close attention to detailed procedures in the preparation and basic maintenance and operation of laboratory equipment, inventory, and requisition of supplies. Assists faculty in supervision of students assigned to laboratories and other related duties. Employment is on an individual academic term basis.
Major Duties
- Daily teaching duties include safety lecture and lab management.
- Ensuring safety and security requirements are met in the classroom and laboratory areas.
- Assist faculty members with classroom instruction, exams, record keeping, adherence to safety procedures, tracking attendance and other miscellaneous tasks related to instruction.
- Cleaning/preparing labs as needed.
Competencies
- Ability to perform weldments in all positions using the Shielded Metal Arc Welding process.
- Ability to perform weldments in all positions using the Gas Metal Arc Welding process.
- Ability to perform weldments in all positions using the Flux-Cored Arc Welding process.
- Ability to manage time.
- Customer service skills.
Minimum Qualifications
- Successful completion of the course(s) which are appropriate to the assignment as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications
- Completion of Master Welder TCC
- Completion of Gas Metal Arc Welder TCC
- Completion of Flux-Cored Arc Welder TCC
Physical Demands
Teaching responsibilities are typically performed in a classroom/lab environment with the employee intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, pushing, and pulling for three (3) – four (4) continuous hours at a time. The employee frequently lifts lightweight objects up to 50LBS. The work is performed in campus buildings and outdoors where the employee is occasionally exposed to cold or inclement weather. The exposure to dirt, dust, grease, machinery with moving parts, chemicals, and fumes is possible in the laboratory environment.Salary/Benefits
