    Description of Duties:

The Department of Engineering and Computer Science encompasses two individual but compatible disciplines. It also manages campus creation facilities including the Peter T. Haughton Fabrication Laboratory and the Mechatronics Laboratory on the Durham campus, and a Fabrication Laboratory on the Morganton campus. The department plays an essential role in fulfilling the mission of the school by developing learning materials and teaching students in our residential, online, and open enrollment programs as well as partnering with distance education and extended program efforts to deliver formal and informal engagement opportunities for teachers and students statewide. The department also currently oversees active extracurricular programs in robotics, rocketry, and competitive programming as well as an active student chapter of the National Society for Black Engineers.

The Instructor of Engineering reports to the Chair of Engineering and is primarily responsible for providing instruction for assigned courses. As general duties of the position, an NCSSM instructor is expected to plan and develop an instructional program that helps students assimilate content and skills specific to each course; to develop and communicate clear course objectives and goals to students; to structure and manage an environment conducive to learning; to maintain the condition of classroom equipment and monitor and disseminate supplies of consumable laboratory materials; to regularly monitor and evaluate student progress, providing them with resources and feedback on their performance; to hold tutorial sessions and/or office hours as outlined by the department and in response to student needs; and to model for students responsibility to self and others.

These expectations will necessarily be extended to the multiple different teaching formats that are supported by the department, including formats for broadcast, remote, hybrid and online teaching as well as in-person instruction on the Morganton campus. Instructors assigned to one discipline may also teach courses in another of the departmental disciplines when applicable to the skill set, background, and interest of the instructor.

Instructors in this position are also expected to follow NCSSM’s philosophy, policies, and procedures; to attend faculty meetings convened for coordination of school activities; to effectively collaborate with colleagues; and to participate in professional development and activities designed for personal intellectual growth. They are further asked to dedicate substantial time towards participation in the academic community within and beyond the school through one or more of the following activities: professional outreach in the form of information, service, and expertise to other schools and organizations; assisting students on special projects or independent, individual or small-group seminar-style study; facilitating student aspirations for college with supportive recommendation letters; developing new course curricula; and providing advising and supervision for school-sponsored programs and extracurricular activities.

Aerospace, Biomedical, Environmental) that can be suitably introduced to a high school audience. Capability with reading and calibration of laboratory devices for measurement is valuable, as are fabrication skills and familiarity with engineering technology (circuits, motors, sensors, mechanical devices) for small scale prototyping.

Preferred knowledge, skills, and abilities include experience teaching courses, the use of educational technology to deliver interactive courses in both in-person and remote formats, the ability to design course curricula, and a willingness to participate in residential school programs including social, recreational, and advisory responsibilities at times other than usual school hours.

    Minimum Education and Experience:

A Master’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field, or a Master’s degree in Education with a technical Bachelor’s degree.
