Chemical Engineering Laboratory Technician

As a new Chemical Engineering Laboratory Technician, you will set up, maintain, calibrate, test, operate, and repair laboratory equipment and computer systems; clean, maintain, and prepare supplies and work areas; and set up and validate a variety of laboratory experiments or procedures.

You will assist/instruct faculty and students (as well as visitors with summer outreach programs) on the use, operation, and safety of equipment and tools in the laboratory; support faculty members in their course instruction by giving lectures and demonstrations on the use of laboratory equipment; and consult with and assist faculty and students on research, capstone, and independent projects. You will consult with faculty members on equipment modifications or needs for use in demonstrations; design and develop teaching aids for use in laboratories and collaborate with faculty members on the development of experiments for laboratory courses.

You will organize, prepare, and maintain laboratory procedures manuals; follow/develop safety protocols and procedures, including departmental procedures for chemical storage, handling, and hazardous waste collection. You will maintain stock rooms, laboratories, prep areas, and other assigned areas in a safe, clean, and orderly condition; encourage awareness of and oversee the proper use of facilities and safe practices; act as liaison with Facilities and Environmental Health and Safety.

Qualified candidates will have a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of five years of professional work experience. Four years of additional experience in lieu of education.

Preferred candidates will have experience or the ability to acquire skills through training in areas including plumbing and pumping systems, electrical systems, computers, data acquisition and control systems, process equipment and instrumentation, and analytical and measurement devices.
