HVAC Mechanic performs maintenance and service repairs on heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems. Installs new units or replacement parts for existing units according to specifications and established safety guidelines. Being an HVAC Mechanic follows blueprints or engineering specifications to install units. Performs troubleshooting to identify the cause of problems. Additionally, HVAC Mechanic maintains and secures a spare parts inventory. Recommends purchasing maintenance equipment and supplies as required to improve processes and efficiencies. Typically requires an apprenticeship and/or completion of technical training. Requires a high school diploma. The regulations governing the location may require an HVAC Mechanical State License and EPA Section 608 Certification (CFC). Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The HVAC Mechanic works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area. Possesses a moderate understanding of general aspects of the job.   • Widener University is currently seeking an HVAC Mechanic – A. Reporting to the Assistant Director for Mechanical Electrical and Plumbing Systems and with minimum supervision, the HVAC Mechanic operates, maintains, and troubleshoots building Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration (HVACR) systems and equipment in order to provide a comfortable and safe environment in all University in accordance with applicable standards of the trade and regulatory agencies.

    Facilities Management staff are responsible to provide safe and beautiful facilities that support the academic mission and campus operations. The Facilities Management Mission is to continuously improve the services we provide and make the experience of students, faculty, staff, and visitors the best it can possibly be. Every staff member may be assigned duties within their capacity aside from duties that are their technical expertise, and every staff member is empowered to perform tasks within their capacity to achieve this Mission.

    This position is essential and is required to report and remain on campus in response to emergencies even when normal university operations are cancelled or suspended. This position may also be required to work weekends and off-hours to support weekend operations and special events.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (including, but not limited to) :

    Essential duties:

    • Operates, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs, as required, building HVACR equipment consistent with manufacturer's guidelines, operating design parameters, and accepted practices to optimize energy use.
    • Installs HVACR units, including electronic, electrical, and mechanical components and connections.
    • Installs HVACR ductwork including flexible tubing and sheet metal construction.
    • Troubleshoots and repairs HVACR units including electronic, electrical, and mechanical components and connections.
    • Maintains and makes operating repairs on electrical equipment and appliances, on oil and gas equipment, on refrigerators, freezers and ice makers, and on other refrigeration equipment.
    • Operates and keeps in good working order a variety of equipment including hand and power tools, mobile electronic devices, measuring/diagnostic/testing meters, and instruments.
    • Conserves, installs, recycles, and reclaims refrigerants.
    • Reads and interprets complex blueprints, sketches, schematics, and piping diagrams.
    • Performs brazing, silver and lead soldering, and pipefitting as required.
    • Provides work order documentation, as required.
    • Coordinates with other trades, as required, to ensure multi-trade projects are completed efficiently and completely.
    • Maintains a professional appearance.
    • Maintains a positive customer service orientation and attitude.

    Secondary responsibilities:

    • Assists in furniture and event set ups and break downs, decorations for special functions, meetings, etc.
    • Assists in emergency response events including snow removal operations.
    • Cooperates with other university employees and related contractors to achieve the best possible outcomes
    • Other duties as assigned and within capability

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (education/training and experience required) :

    Required:

    • High school diploma or equivalent
    • Must possess valid driver’s license
    • Possess EPA Universal/R410A license.
    • Current documentation indicating successful completion of formal training classes or programs and licensure in the HVAC trade or be able to exhibit acceptable life experiences in HVAC work.
    • A minimum of ten years of service in the trade of HVAC technician.
    • Must have the ability to research information, from various sources, to facilitate repairs of campus HVAC/R equipment (e.g. campus technical manuals, as built prints, equipment supply distributors, and internet websites, etc.)
    • Must have the ability to recover, recycle, and reclaim refrigerants adhering to HVAC/R industry standards, specifications, and protocols.
    • Must have the ability to perform preventative maintenance on all campus HVAC/R equipment using the campus work order system, visual inspection, verbal or written instruction etc.
    • Must have the ability to properly lubricate, repair, replace, and align both direct and indirect mechanical drive components, for all campus HVAC/R equipment.
    • Must have the ability to lubricate, repair, replace, rebuild, and align all pumps serving campus HVAC/R equipment.
    • Must have the ability to verify and diagnose proper operation of chilled/heating water hydronic generation equipment such as centrifugal, screw, scroll, and reciprocating chillers, gas and oil-fired boilers.
    • Must be capable of troubleshooting equipment control panels both locally and through interfaced communication, with building automation systems.
    • Must have the ability to troubleshoot and repair all central heating/cooling air distribution systems.
    • Must have the ability to verify, troubleshoot, isolate, repair or replace all associated components of the campus chilled/heating hydronic water distribution systems.
    • Must have the ability to install, secure, repair or replace all associated components of the campus air distribution systems, to optimize airflow and structural stability.
    • Must have the ability to troubleshoot and repair all Electric heat sources throughout the campus i.e. reheat, air handler, auxiliary, and baseboard heating coils.
    • Must have the ability to implement several pipefitting techniques to facilitate repairs of campus HVAC/R equipment (e.g. pipe threading, brazing, lead and silver soldering). Where applicable, must recover, pressurize, evacuate, and charge refrigerant properly to insure HVAC/R equipment integrity.
    • Must have the ability to follow both verbal and written directions in English; the ability to interact with students, faculty, administration, and staff in a professional and positive manner, as well as the ability to read and understand NFPA and ICC codes and OSHA guidelines, such as Material Safety Data Sheets, equipment safety data plates, fuel/chemical flash points, etc.

    Preferred:

    • Must have the ability to verify, calibrate, troubleshoot, repair or replace all control system components from source through end devices.
    • Must be proficient at a variety of applications implemented throughout the campus such as: direct digital control, pneumatic, electro-pneumatic, electronic, electric, and electro­mechanical controls.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND/OR UNUSUAL HOURS:

    • Must be able to stand, sit, bend, kneel, climb stairs, reach, and climb ladders;
    • Must be able work in confined spaces and in elevated spaces (e.g. scaffold, bucket-truck platform, ladders, high-reach lifts);
    • Must be able to lift 60 pounds at waist height and carry for 20 feet;
    • Must be able to lift 40 pounds from ground to overhead;
    • Must be able to shovel snow manually;
    • Essential and required to report and remain on campus in response to emergencies and weather events even when normal business operations are cancelled or suspended;
    • May be required to work on weekends and holidays to support weekend operations or special events
