Ensures integrity of underwriting activities and processes. Being a Health Underwriting Manager participates in the development of master policies and other official documents. Verifies that the account contracts are in compliance with government regulations. Additionally, Health Underwriting Manager typically is a RN with clinical experience. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a director. The Health Underwriting Manager manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Health Underwriting Manager typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1-3 years supervisory experience may be required. Responsibilities:- Manage and coordinate underwriting and policy issuance activities to include development and administration of underwriting programs.
- Responsible for assisting in developing and/or enhancing underwriting policies, guidelines, workflows, and practices for the department.
- Cooperate with Compliance/Product Development Department to evaluate endorsements and policies.
- Drive business initiatives and strategies adhering to role responsibilities, process and workflow expectations continually seeking to improve workflow efficiency.
- Train, lead, manage and develop Underwriting employees. Promote and ensure employees pursue continuing education and training.
- Principal contact for underwriting department issues. Manage unusual, complex risks ensuring compliance, consistency, and profitability.
- Track underwriting department activities for reporting purposes to company Directors.
- Manage rate and form filings with all applicable regulatory agencies.
- Assign underwriting and binding authority.
- Negotiate reinsurance agreements.
- Promotes collaboration between other teams and departments.
- Responsible for employee performance reviews / evaluation of individual performance.
Qualifications:- Minimum of B.S. or B.A. degree or equivalent business experience required.
- Indiana resident insurance agent licenses in property/casualty (including surplus lines license) or the ability to acquire these in an expedient manner. Licensing in other states is also required.
- Prior Supervisory experience.
- Excellent analytical and decision-making skills
- Strong interpersonal, communication, negotiation, presentation, and relationship-building abilities are required.
- Excess & surplus lines, and financial institutions experience desirable.
- Background in D&O liability and/or Professional liability is a plus
- Ability to travel 5-10% of the time which may involve overnight or weekend travel.
- Ability to successfully pass a criminal background check and MVR.
