  • TITLE: School Nurse Leader/Head Nurse The duties and responsibilities included herein are in addition to the duties and responsibilities outlined in the School Nurse Job Description. SUMMARY: Reporting to the Building Principal and/or Director of Student Services and Special Education, the School Nurse Leader/Head Nurse will strengthen and facilitate the educational process by improving and protecting the health status of children and by identification and assistance in the removal or modification of health-related barriers to the learning process for children; responsible for assisting the school administration with health-related leadership decisions, communication to staff, parents, and students regarding health-related matters, budget development, and professional development; serves as liaison between the administration and the school nurses; supports the work of the District in its efforts to continually improve the school nursing services provided to students. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Communicate and share best practices and current research regarding nursing practices, data use, technology, and other associated areas pertinent to the field of school nursing. Assist in the development of appropriate school procedures to provide for the most effective administration of school nursing related matters. Maintain and subtract data for the school health database in preparation of meetings or to file reports. Manage special projects as assigned by the administration. Meet with the school physician to review annual standing orders, acquire annual prescription to restock house Epi-Pen supplies, and signatures for bi-annual renewal of partial medication delegation waiver with the Department of Public Health. File annual mandated state reports with the Department of Public Health. Attend the Central Mass. Regional Nurse Leader meetings and Mass. Nurse Leader conference. Serve on District Wellness Committee. Organize and attend monthly nurse meetings. Coordinate the use of nursing students with the Central Office. Manage technology, calibration of audiometers, nursing-specific supplies, professional development, and maintain inventories. Arrange for the disposal of sharps and medications, as needed. Report regularly to the administration any development or problems associated with the District nursing services that may require action. Assist with the hiring process for School Nurse vacancies and Substitute Nurses. Coordinate with Oxford Fire Department for maintenance of AED machines in all school buildings. Coordinate with Oxford Fire/EMS Department to schedule and offer CPR training and certificate classes. Maintain thorough knowledge of District policies and procedures and participate in the revision or adoption of policies that involve school health services. Maintain a health services webpage to communicate general information regarding school health. Advise the District through the Assistant Superintendent of Student Services and Special Education on the development of health-related policies, procedures, and personnel needs. Collect and report data for statistical reports, as required. Provide and/or arrange in-service training needed by nursing personnel. Orientation of new School Nurses and Substitute Nurses. Arrange for and call Substitutes School Nurses, as necessary, and notify building’s Main Office. Serve as point person for Substitute Nurses who are working in a District building, assisting them as necessary. Serve as District’s liaison with community health programs and agencies. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education and Experience Must be a current School Nurse for Oxford Public Schools for a minimum of three (3) years. Must possess current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Must hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university. Must hold valid certification as a School Nurse with the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Must have current certification in CPR/AED and First Aid. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of medical disorders and treatment, child growth and development, public health problems, and procedures for treatment in coordination with other health and social service agencies. Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations affecting the delivery of school health services; knowledge of the school organization and the community served. Skills required include: strong organizational skills; computer skills; team-oriented with excellent interpersonal and communication skills; making independent and timely nursing decisions; securing cooperation and respect of students and staff; maintaining effective working relationships; and accurately recording services rendered. Abilities required include: handling projects professionally; demonstrated ability to exercise good and independent judgement; prioritize tasks; work both independently and collaboratively; coordinate and facilitate services between the school, local health agency, and other community resources; develop and maintain health records on students; participation in ongoing in-service training; maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to remain in a stationary position for extended periods; move and traverse swiftly throughout the building; position oneself to effectively assist students; close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus; mental acuity to collect and interpret data, evaluate, reason, define problems, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, make valid judgments and decisions. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Exposure to disease/pathogens, blood, bodily fluids, medications, and toxic chemicals. Employee experiences constant interruptions and deadlines. The noise level is quiet to loud. In-district and out-of-town travel required as necessary for training and/or to carry out duties and responsibilities of the position.
