The Oneida-Herkimer-Madison BOCES School Communications Service is seeking a Graphic Design Specialist to provide customized graphic design and communications support to public school districts and the OHM BOCES.

We strive to be marketing and communication leaders for public education clients, advising school districts on creative, strategic, innovative and effective communication solutions and collaboratively implementing those plans.

DESCRIPTION

Our Graphic Design Specialists are team leaders who help coordinate and produce complex visual graphic and promotional materials. They work closely with district superintendents and central administration to facilitate design concepts from print, web, social media and other platforms. This is a Civil Service position.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Understand the needs of your clients and support their goals through strategic visual communications.
• Serve as the subject matter expert, working directly with superintendents and other district and building level administrators to understand their goals and provide recommendations on how to best meet those goals.
• A team leader who can provide creative direction to junior designers as needed.
• Utilize your graphic design skills – applying creativity and knowledge of audience expectations – to produce materials that effectively reach your intended stakeholders and reinforces your clients’ missions.
• Evaluate emerging design tools, such as new programs, apps, etc., and make recommendations on adding these tools.
• Maintain the highest print and digital publication standards, ensuring all content is consistent with branding and style guides.
• Works closely with public relations staff and a variety of other school personnel to determine promotional needs, propose project design concepts, determine timelines and coordinate project completion.
• Attend meetings and maintains records of information released.

As a Graphic Design Specialist, you will be supported by a team of experienced design colleagues working in similar roles throughout the region and a team of public relations professionals who create strategic content. You will routinely collaborate with the School Communications team to support all clients and accomplish communications projects and initiatives.

Our shared service model provides our clients with a wide range of communications expertise that no single communications professional could provide alone.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in visual arts, new media design, graphic design, web design or a closely related field; AND three (3) years of experience in the design, development, and implementation of graphic materials for use in publications, presentations and websites; OR
• Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate’s Degree as above AND five (5) years of experience as listed above.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT Possession of an appropriate level, valid Driver's License at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout appointment.

NOTE Certain assignments made to employees in this class will require access to transportation to meet field work requirements in a timely and efficient manner.

REQUIREMENTS

• Excellent knowledge of the principles and practices of graphic design;
• Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills;
• Excellent project management skills;
• Ability to design, develop and implement graphic materials for use in publications, presentations and websites using Adobe Creative Suite software;
• Ability to acquire a knowledge of school district operations and complex educational issues;
• Ability to establish and maintain effective and comfortable working relationships with others;
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as work effectively in a team setting and steer design concepts to junior designers;
• Ability to balance competing priorities and deadlines, show initiative and common sense, bring energy and flexibility in support of a team environment; and
• Excellent knowledge of appropriate design and technical techniques.

Pay: $46,101.00 - $50,377.00 per year
