Golf Superintendent - Assistant assists the Superintendent in the overall maintenance and care of the golf course, including turf/grass management, irrigation, and chemical applications (e.g., fertilizer, pesticides) to ensure quality playing conditions. General Purpose:
Performs a variety of professional, general administrative, and supervisory duties related to assisting the Director of Golf with planning, coordinating all phases of golf course maintenance and beautification, buildings and facilities maintenance, construction & repair. Work is performed in a customer service oriented environment that values teamwork, innovation and creativity.
Works under the general supervision of the Director of Golf.
Provides general supervision to seasonal employees.
Assists in managing the day-to-day operations of the Dinaland Golf Course; recommends golf course project priorities; may coordinate projects; determines materials needed to complete specific objectives; allocates personnel as needed to assure timely project completion. Critically evaluates the operations of watering, mowing, fertilizing and cultural maintenance of greens, tees and fairways. Responds to public questions, explains golf maintenance procedures and policies and resolves disputes among citizens utilizing the golf course.
Directs, coordinates and reviews the work of assigned crew members and participates in the annual performance plan evaluating golf personnel. Monitors compliance to Uintah Special Service District 1 policies and procedures.
Performs general administrative duties; Assists with the compilation of maintenance records, accident records, vehicle maintenance records, equipment and labor costs; collects information and data for various reports.
Assists in the planning, design and construction of various golf features such as greens, fairways, bunkers, ponds, pavilions, shelters, signs and other facilities. Monitors the need for and supervises the application of fertilizer, herbicide, pesticide, soil conditioner, insecticides, fungicides and other turf maintenance procedures.
Monitors operation of computerized golf course irrigation system; performs the installation maintenance and repair program of water sprinkler systems, oversees and performs mowing, watering and aeration of golf turf; carries out supplemental irrigation to sustain or force growth; assures operation and maintenance of automated sprinkler systems and water pumps; tours projects to determine work progress and general condition of grounds.
Monitors health condition of trees, shrubs and other horticulture; evaluates diseases and analyzes and makes decisions for the treatment of unhealthy trees, shrubs and related greenery.
Participates in the development of turf management programs; monitors health conditions of trees, shrubs and other horticulture; evaluates diseases and analyzes and makes decisions for the treatment of unhealthy trees, shrubs and related greenery. Performs appropriate duties to accomplish planting of laws, trees, shrubs, and other greenery; oversees pruning and trimming projects; assures adherence to watering schedules.
Assists with seasonal duties such as snow removal, winterizing sprinkler systems to avoid freezing, flushes watering systems in spring, repairs other equipment and facilities.
Operates equipment and trains seasonal laborers in equipment usage such as utility vehicles, backhoe, loader tractor, Bobcat, Verdi Drain, aerators, lawn mowers, and landscape equipment. Also ensures training in safety related areas including MSDS, personal protective equipment and hazard identification.
Assures water quality standards and oversees general clean-up maintenance, and repair of restrooms, pavilions, grounds, and picnic tables.
Ensures that department personnel are effectively trained. Monitors employee behavior and enforces consistent adherence. Refer performance issues to the Director of Golf.
1. Education and Experience:
A. Graduation from high school.
AND
B. Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in the maintenance, upkeep and beautification of turf, golf facilities and related environment.
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience.
2. Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Considerable knowledge of the philosophy, principles, technologies and practices of a maintenance management system for golf courses necessary to provide effective public service; organization, development, and operations of the administration of golf courses; sound ecological and conservation practices necessary in rural environments; methods, practices, materials, equipment and tools used in the construction, maintenance, and operations of a course and facility maintenance system; maintenance equipment such as backhoe, loader, dump truck, mowers, tractor, power overseeders, aerators, thatchers, welder, trimmers, etc.; landscape and sprinkler system design; flow pumps; hazards and related safety precautions associated with equipment operations; herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, and pesticides, and proper application of the same; turf and greens management; interpersonal communications skills; modern technological methods and systems in use for golf course management; PC based systems and applications.
Ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information including giving assignments and instructions to team members and assistant; work independently with minimal supervision, and able to analyze situations and make appropriate decisions Includes receiving information and instructions from the Executive Director; establish, maintain and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; control expenditure of funds; evaluate service operations to ensure their effectiveness; read and understand landscape and engineering plans, specifications, and drawings involved in golf course development; plan and direct capital improvement projects; effectively oversee work and train seasonal employees; prepare professional correspondence, memos, reports and literature regarding the golf course.
3. Special Qualifications:
Must possess a valid Utah State Drivers License or be able to obtain within 3 months of hire date.
Must possess a State of Utah pesticide applicator license or be able to obtain within 3 months of hire date.
4. Work Environment:
Work is performed in both an indoor office setting as well as outdoors on the Golf Course. Exposure to noise, electrical hazards, dust, chemicals, mechanical hazards, and other elements such as inclement weather heat, rain, snow etc. when performing daily field maintenance and assessment of tasks. Requires a variety of physical activities, generally involving some muscular strain, such as walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, lifting up to 50 lbs. Talking, hearing and seeing are essential to the performance of the job. Common eye, hand, finger dexterity exist. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, discriminating thinking and creative problem solving. Must be able to work weekends, holidays and varied schedules including evening and night shifts.
