Genetics Counselor jobs in Illinois
Genetics Counselor provides genetic counseling and education to individuals and families at risk for hereditary disorders. Obtains and analyzes family medical history to identify patients at risk for specific disorders or syndromes. Being a Genetics Counselor recommends genetic testing as warranted and counsels patients on test results, treatment and alternative coping methods. May provide crisis intervention as needed. Additionally, Genetics Counselor requires a master's degree of Genetic Counseling. Typically reports to a manager or director. Requires board certification from the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) or American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG). Typically requires a state license to practice. Genetics Counselor's years of experience requirement may be unspecified. Certification and/or licensing in the position's specialty is the main requirement. (Copyright 2024 Salary.com)

Position Highlights- Position: Genetic Counselor Assistant
- Location: Evanston Hospital
- Full Time/Part Time: Per Diem/Resource
- Hours: Scheduled as needed Monday-Friday
- Provide brief conversation related to the benefits of testing, clinical utility of testing, and the possible familial impacts of genetic testing.
- Assist patient with decision to schedule an appointment or obtain testing for patients scheduled in GCC schedule
- Document personal and family history and gather information necessary to determine reason for visit
- Support informed decision making regarding genetic testing and health management options
- Schedules new and established patient visits in accordance with patient preference and physician availability
- Coordinate patient care daily via check-in, order input, paperwork organization, end of day follow up of no-shows/cancellations
- Administrative duties as it relates to patient care and follow through
- Education: Bachelor’s degree required
- Skills:
- Strong communication skills
- Ability to be flexible in meeting the demands of patients and physicians
- Ability to multi-task and problem solve
- Experience:
- Minimum one year of work experience in genetic counseling setting preferred.
- Experience with Epic or other EMR system preferred
