Compensation Supervisor supervises a team working on compensation plans and programs and related analysis. Oversees common compensation projects, including survey participation, job evaluation, salary structure development, incentive plan design, pay program administration and other associated initiatives. Being a Compensation Supervisor ensures that compensation plans and programs are consistent with organizational policies and all applicable federal and state laws. Maintains salary structures and company compensation policies. Additionally, Compensation Supervisor is responsible for survey participation and compensation analysis. Requires a bachelor's degree. May require a Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) certification. Typically reports to a manager. The Compensation Supervisor supervises a group of primarily para-professional level staffs. May also be a level above a supervisor within high volume administrative/ production environments. Makes day-to-day decisions within or for a group/small department. Has some authority for personnel actions. To be a Compensation Supervisor typically requires 3-5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor.     Basic Function

    Lead the design and management of the University of Rhode Island compensation programs. Create, communicate, and administer competitive compensation programs. Utilize effective collaboration, data driven analysis, market trends, and best practices to counsel University department leadership on all matters relating to compensation, classification, and position management.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    Essential Duties And Responsibilities

    Assist the Director, Personnel Services in the design, implementation, and maintenance of comprehensive compensation and classification programs for classified and non-classified employees.

    Assist with the review of reclassification requests for classified and non-classified positions, including but not limited to:

    • Analyzing comparable positions to determine appropriate placement of reclassified and new positions into the classification and pay grade structures under both the URI Board of Trustees’ and State Civil Service jurisdiction.
    • Consulting with departments in the creation of new positions and the reorganization of workload/assignments among current staff members. Research, design, and implement improvements in the URI Board of Trustees classification plan.

    Serve as a subject matter expert in the area of compensation management (both salary & total compensation) and salary administration. Develop and deliver solution-oriented results.

    Provide leadership, consultation, collaboration, and guidance to University departments regarding job architecture, salary structure, pay equity, paygrade assessment, FLSA status, education and experience requirements, career ladders, compensation models, and trends analysis.

    Review and make actionable recommendations regarding the current compensation plans to ensure market relevance, industry benchmarking, equity reviews, best practices, and institutional objectives. Leverage internal and external talent channels to ensure that compensation information is current and accurate.

    Actively participate in the development of new classified and non-classified position specifications.

    Exercise prudent fiscal, policy, and business judgment in analyzing and applying University guidelines to compensation decision-making.

    Develop and maintain strong working relationships with University departments to ensure effective and timely coordination of compensation-related decisions.

    Assist with industry-based compensation salary surveys (CUPA-HR, etc.)

    Provide support to other functional area in the Human Resources (HR) department and serve as a backup for other HR department staff on an as needed basis.

    Develop, maintain, and generate statistical reports and analysis on all compensation and classification-related areas. Ensure compliance in all applicable areas.

    Required Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree.
    • Minimum of five years of progressively responsible compensation management experience.
    • Demonstrated significant experience with compensation administration methods, practices, and techniques.
    • Demonstrated ability to collect, analyze, evaluate, and prepare compensation-related statistical and market-based data.
    • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement action plans to address both routine and complex compensation issues.
    • Demonstrated supervisory experience.
    • Demonstrated strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
    • Demonstrated proficiency in written communications skills.
    • Demonstrated experience with database systems.
    • Demonstrated computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite).
    • Demonstrated ability to interpret institutional policies, plans, objectives, rules and regulations and communicate the interpretation to others.
    • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups/populations.
