Job Summary
The Senior Director of Communications is responsible for overseeing and integrating various communication functions within the organization including internal and external communications. This individual will ensure that all communication strategies align with the organization's goals, enhancing its reputation and engagement with key stakeholders, employees, donors, and the public. The Senior Director of Communications is a central figure in managing and harmonizing the organization's communication efforts across various communications domains.
Key Responsibilities- Communication Strategy: Develop and execute communication strategies aligned with organizational objectives, ensuring consistency in messaging and branding across all communication channels.
- Team Leadership: Lead and mentor a team of communication professionals, providing guidance, support, and professional development opportunities to ensure high performance and career growth.
- Internal Communication: Oversee internal communication initiatives to foster transparency, engagement, and alignment among employees. Develop and execute strategies to effectively communicate organizational updates, initiatives, and changes.
- External Communication: Drive external communication efforts to enhance brand visibility, reputation, and engagement with key stakeholders including media, customers, partners, and the community.
- Content Creation: Oversee the creation of compelling content for various channels including websites, social media, newsletters, events, and marketing collateral. Ensure content is relevant, engaging, and aligned with brand voice and messaging.
- Presentation Preparation: Create compelling and effective speeches and pitch decks for executive leadership, advancement, and marketing team members.
- Brand Management: Ensure consistency in brand messaging and visual identity across all communication materials. Develop and enforce brand guidelines to maintain brand integrity and recognition.
- Measurement and Reporting: Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the effectiveness of communication initiatives. Regularly monitor and analyze metrics to assess performance and inform future strategies.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborate with cross-functional teams including marketing, advancement, human resources, and executive leadership to ensure alignment of communication efforts with overall business objectives.
- Donor Communication: Develop and execute communication strategies to engage and retain donors, including newsletters, donor recognition programs, pitch decks and fundraising campaign materials.
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or related field. Master’s degree preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in communications, with a comprehensive understanding of donor relations, internal and external communications, and customer service.
- Proven leadership skills with the ability to manage and inspire a team.
- Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Strong strategic thinking and planning abilities, with a track record of implementing successful communication campaigns.
- Proficiency in digital communication tools and platforms, including social media.
- Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and to manage crisis communication effectively.
