    SUMMARY: The Queens University of Charlotte Campus Recreation Graduate Assistant’s overall mission is to enrich the co-curricular experience of students at Queens University of Charlotte. This role establishes and maintains an active, highly visible, and deeply engaged presence to sustain and grow strong collaborative relationships with students, university faculty and staff. Primary responsibilities include student staff supervision, scheduling and training, managing an intramural sports program, and growing wellness programing for the campus community. This part-time, 20 hours a week Graduate Assistant position reports to the Assistant Athletic Director Club Sports and Wellness.

    The successful candidate must be currently enrolled as a full-time graduate student at Queens University of Charlotte. This GA role includes tuition remission for up to three (3) courses per semester, including summer, while actively serving in the GA role. GAs are required to live on-campus and must sleep and live-in the assigned GA room and building. Because this a mandatory live-in position it includes a rent-free, one-bedroom, furnished on-campus apartment with water, electricity, cable, internet, and free on-site laundry. On-campus apartments are pet/ and partner-friendly. In addition, GAs are provided a free campus dining plan during the academic year, free on-campus parking, and free membership to Queens Fitness Center. GAs enjoy flexible scheduling. Time away must be coordinated in advance with the GA’s immediate supervisor.

    The GA is recognized as a University Official and represents the university and the department on and off university property. Under the supervision of the Assistant Athletic Director Club Sports and Wellness, the GA position begins on July 5, 2024. There is no expressed or implied commitment to a paid position upon completion of the internship.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    As a GA, you will learn and apply knowledge and skills in the following areas:

    Programming:

    • Learn and assist in strategic planning of campus-wide programming, in conjunction with the Assistant Athletic Director Club Sports and Wellness
    • Learn and host at least one program a semester in collaboration with campus partners
    • Learn and coordinate communication and marketing of Campus Recreation programs
    • Learn and practice fitness center management
    • Learn and practice budget and inventory management
    • Learn and create ways to increase student engagement (through marketing, etc)
    • Learn and manage the onboarding, scheduling and training of student employees

    Weekends and On-Call Rotations:

    • The GA learns and applies their knowledge to serve in an on-call duty rotation responding to student crises and emergencies. This necessitates the GA being on-campus and available on nights and weekends and within 15 minutes of campus when serving as the staff member on-call
    • Due to the nature of this role, the GA is required to live on-campus and must live in the assigned room and building
    • GAs are considered mandatory reporters under Title IX and the Clery Act
    • GAs are expected to abide by and report violations of all local, state, and federal laws and regulations
    • GAs are expected to assist with residential move-in and closing of the residence halls

    Qualifications

    • At least one year of experience working as part of a student activities or another student affair functional area
    • Currently enrolled in a graduate program at Queens University of Charlotte
    • Possess leadership skills and the ability to work in a team
    • Possess effective communication skills in order to successfully approach people, mediate problem situations, and enforce policies
    • Easily approachable, friendly, and able to establish rapport with students
    • Ability to use discretion and exercise good judgment 
    • Must be able to maintain confidentiality of sensitive student information
    • Demonstrated commitment to social justice, equity, and inclusion
    • Experience that demonstrates sensitivity and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of first-generation college students
    • Remain calm, cool and collected in time of crisis
    • Exceptionally strong communication skills (verbal, written, interpersonal, presentation) and ability to quickly establish and maintain strong rapport with a diverse student body, as well as throughout the university
    • Ability to mediate problems, situations, and enforce policies
    • Ability to maintain confidential information in a professional manner
