Business Development Director directs the execution of the business development vision, strategy, plans, and processes to drive sales, increase revenue, expand markets, and accomplish financial objectives. Identifies and evaluates new markets, partners, channels, and customers. Being a Business Development Director develops and uses contacts and relationships within the industry, business environment, and customer base to understand and respond to competition, pricing, and product demand changes. Oversees the development of proposals and contracts for new business opportunities and manages negotiations. Additionally, Business Development Director collaborates with marketing, sales, product development, and other stakeholders to support business development plans. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to top management. The Business Development Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. To be a Business Development Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function.     Summary: The Executive Director is responsible for the leadership and management of the BDB under the strategic policy direction set by the Board of Directors.

    Hours: This is a full-time in-person salaried position. 

    Salary Range: Not applicable

    Hiring Range: $100,000 - $120,000, with some flexibility for the ideal candidate


    Typical Qualifications:

    Five to eight years of progressively responsible experience in economic development is preferred. Experience in the following fields may be substituted on a year for year basis: community development, project management, banking-finance, commercial real estate, professional business services, manufacturing, aerospace, healthcare, agriculture, small business, entrepreneurship, information technology, power generation, or private capital.

    Management experience is required. Project management experience is preferred. Experience in establishing programs is also desirable.

    Experience in a not-for-profit is preferred (volunteer experience counts).


    Experience with Microsoft Office software suite is required. Experience with QuickBooks accounting and/or financial reporting software is required.


    A working knowledge of the local community, including government, business, and the economic environment is preferred.

    A college degree required, but relevant experience may be substituted on a year for year basis.

    A Florida Driver's License is required.


    Examples of Duties

    •           Functionally the Executive Director serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the organization.

    •           Responsible for the day-to-day management and oversight of staff. Assigns and delegates duties to staff

    members; monitors progress; resolves issues preventing staff success. Schedules events and programs in

    cooperation with staff members.

    •           Develops a shared vision for the future of the organization; works cooperatively with Board members, staff,

    and partner organizations, including county government.

    •           Responds to inquiries in a timely manner.

    •           Implements Board policies and directions.

    •           Manages the monthly agenda preparation.

    •           Works cooperatively with county government officials in the pursuit of economic development goals and

    objectives. Establishes work programs which meet the requirements of the county government contract.

    •           Develops and oversee programs and policies for effective business retention, expansion, and attraction and

    for new capital investment and employment opportunities in the community.

    •           Builds and maintains relationships with C-suite and executive leadership teams at targeted industry

    companies. Facilitates communication between targeted businesses and County government officials and

    staff.

    •           Oversees the conduct of surveys and interviews with business owner-operators via the Pulse Program and

    the compilation of and reports conclusions for business assistance.

    •           Oversees the preparation of site location assistance and requests for proposals from business owners, site

    consultants, and real estate professionals.

    •           Oversees the preparation of newsletters, press releases, website, social media pages, and business guides.

    •           Works cooperatively with CareerSource, Indian River State College, Martin County School District and local

    and regional partners on initiatives for workforce development, skills gaps and technical training programs.

    •           Works in concert with the chambers of commerce and local and regional trade associations.

    •           Prepares the annual budget plan for Board approval. Creates an annual planning calendar, integrating data

    gathered from business operators into a focused work plan which drives budget preparation.

    •           Prepares and analyzes monthly and quarterly financial reports. Advises the Board of budgetary issues and

    trends. Responds to queries regarding finances.

    •           Develops and maintains accountable fiscal practices which link operational costs with specific programs and

    projects.

    •           Works cooperatively with external auditors in reviewing financial operations.

    •           Anticipates community needs and gives high priority to responsiveness and customer service.


    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    •          Knowledge of QuickBooks or similar financial reporting software.

    •          Knowledge of principles and practices of economic development.

    •          Strong time management, project management, and organizational management skills.

    •          Skilled in the use of Microsoft office software.

    •          Skilled in customer service and public relations practices.

    •          Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

    •          Ability to overcome tensions, eliminate barriers to success, and solve problems.

    •          Ability to balance shifting priorities and deadlines.

    •          Ability to lead in group dynamics and encourage diverse partnership collaboration.

    •          Ability to analyze quantitative and qualitative data; ability to report data in meaningful ways.

    •          Ability to prepare and execute an annual business plan and budget.

    •          Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

    •          Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with C-suite and executive business leadership,

    community and private organizations, elected officials, government department heads, and the general

    public.

    •          Ability to work effectively with others to achieve personal, team, organizational, and countywide goals.


    Supplemental Information

    Must be able to work a varied schedule that may include evenings and weekends and/or overnight travel. Work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as office or meeting and training rooms; use of safe workplace practices with office equipment; avoidance of trips and falls; everyday interaction with people and observance of fire and building safety regulations and traffic signals and laws when driving.
