Animal Technician, Sr. provides daily care for research animals of various species. Cleans and disinfects cages and equipment. Being an Animal Technician, Sr. monitors the health and well being of the animals, maintains logs of animal diet, behavior, vital signs and other data. Follows standard operating procedures and all biosafety and animal welfare regulations. Additionally, Animal Technician, Sr. may perform procedures to collect samples. May transport animals to and from laboratories. Requires a high school diploma. May require Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) or other certification. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Animal Technician, Sr. works under moderate supervision. Gaining or has attained full proficiency in a specific area of discipline. As Kent County’s only animal shelter, we care for hundreds of animals each year, with the mindset that each and every single adoptable pet will receive food, shelter, medical attention and love until they’re home . Job Summary
The Animal Care Technician is responsible for providing quality care and treatment for our shelter animals. ACTs clean living quarters, prepare meals, enrich the animals (this can include fetch in one of the play yards, grooming, car rides), assist the Adoption Coordinator with Meet and Greets, provide medication as needed, walk our dogs three times a day, and maintain cleanliness and organization throughout the shelter and storage areas.
ACSKC is a no-kill animal shelter. In the rare case euthanasia is determined necessary by a certified veterinarian, Animal Care Technicians are not required to be a part of the procedure.
While not required, applicants with experience handling animals and a medical background are strongly preferred.
Position Responsibilities
Animal Care
● Ability to handle all cats and dogs regardless of their breed, temperament or behavior
● Clean and disinfect kennels, suites, cages, equipment, runs and other areas of the facility
● Provide food, water and proper care for all shelter animals by adhering to schedules
● Report any signs of illness, disease, injury or unusual activity to the Medical Coordinator
● Ability to follow instructions, measure prescribed dosages and administer medications as directed by the Medical Coordinator
● Perform daily animal enrichment activities
● Ability to walk all dogs regardless of leash behavior
● Assist the Adoption Coordinator with dog behavioral assessments
● Follow all written shelter procedures and protocols
Shelter Upkeep & Maintenance
● Clean and restock laundry, dishes, toys, litter pans and carriers
● Restock food and litter bins after each room is cleaned
● Take out trash from waste receptacles throughout the shelter
● Keep Staff Break Room tidy
● Organize donations for the shelter and Pet Food Pantry
● Alert Director of Facility of malfunctioning or broken equipment or appliances
Public Relations
● Project and maintain a positive attitude with and around the public, volunteers and peers
● Assist the Adoption Coordinator with adoption meetings
● Provide cordial, responsive and accurate customer service

Educational/Experience Requirements
● High School Diploma or GED required
● Background in animal care and animal handling strongly preferred
● Background in medicine or applicants who are currently taking classes in the medical field strongly preferred
Physical Actions
● ACTs must be able to work around people and animals, including standing, walking, bending, crouching, standing on a step stool, and lifting at least 50lbs.
Physical Environment
● Required job duties are performed around the shelter and outdoors. This includes regular exposure to animals, in their kennels, outdoors in the play yards, etc.
Hours
● ACTs must have weekend availability, be able to work holidays, and occasionally work overtime
