Actuarial Fellow utilizes statistical analysis and modeling to assess and manage risk and estimate financial outcomes. Compiles, prepares, and analyzes data to develop statistical models, probability tables, and actuarial studies and evaluate the likelihood and financial impact of various risks. Being an Actuarial Fellow assists with product design and development by analyzing risk groups and calculating appropriate insurance rates, premium levels, and rating systems and structures. Records and tracks accruals, claims, and settlements and prepares documents for input into regulatory filings, financial budgets, forecasts, and other financial projections. Additionally, Actuarial Fellow applies knowledge of mathematics, probability, statistics, principles of finance and business to calculations in life, health, social, and casualty insurance, annuities, and pensions. Requires a bachelor's degree. Requires Fellow of Society of Actuaries (FSA). Typically reports to a manager. To be an Actuarial Fellow typically requires 12+ years of related experience. Achievement and depth of knowledge of specialization or field is the main differentiator. Advisory role on complex and challenging projects and initiatives.     Our mission is to implement community-based climate change solutions by empowering the next generation of leaders committed to a just and sustainable future.

    During the 11-month term of service, SSC Fellows have the opportunity to make significant contributions by leading meaningful projects while also developing as professionals, growing their networks, and establishing a career in the climate field.

    SSC Fellows are matched with organizations across California in target regions that are vulnerable to the effects of climate change including the San Francisco Bay Area, Southern California, the Central Valley, and the Central Coast.

    Fellows empower climate-ready communities to build a sustainable, healthy, and just future for our people and planet.

    Program term dates are September 3, 2024 July 31, 2025.

    Responsibilities

    Essential Duties

    • Complete projects related to resource waste reduction, community engagement and outreach, and K-12 education with a government agency, nonprofit, or school.
    • Support the organization’s climate action initiatives by creating deliverables such as Climate Action Plans, conducting waste and energy audits, developing outreach materials, research reports, and environmental curriculums.
    • Deliver information about climate and environment to an audience that includes homeowners, facilities managers, jurisdictions, community members, students, and families.
    • Encourage the audience to change their behaviors and act in ways that are more sustainable for the environment and their communities.

    Desired Qualifications

    • Passion for community-oriented climate change solutions and interest in launching a career in sustainability
    • Experience with, or training in, climate science, sustainability, environmental justice, education, community outreach, and project management
    • Past service experience (e.g., volunteering, community service, etc.)
    • Associates degree or above AND / OR relevant experience
    • Being local to the community where you will serve

    Requirements

    AmeriCorps Requirements

    • Be a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident of the United States*
    • Ability to pass FBI, CA Department of Justice, out-of-state (if applicable), and National Sex Offender Public Registry background checks prior to service
    • Currently, we are unable to accept applicants with student visas (such as F1 or F2 student visas, J1 or J2 exchange visitor visas, G series visas, etc.

    or those with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status.

    Sustainability Service Corps Requirements

    • At least 17 years of age and in possession of a high school diploma or its equivalent
    • Test negatively for tuberculosis if working with minors
    • Be vaccinated against COVID-19 or submit to weekly testing
    • Live in the state of California
    • Commitment to the full term of service (1700 hours and 11 months for full-time term)
    • Capability to work in a professional office or field setting
    • Strong verbal and written communication and teamwork skills
