Accounting Clerk performs routine accounting activities such as data entry, maintenance of the general ledger, preparation of various accounting statements and financial reports. Reviews, codes, and verifies transactions including billings, invoices, checks, and journal entries. Being an Accounting Clerk assists in completing moderately complex calculations using spreadsheets and other software tools. Reconciles accounts and bank statements. Additionally, Accounting Clerk has a basic understanding of bookkeeping and accounting principles. Requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Invoice Clerk (IC) reports directly to the Controller or Assistant Controller. The IC processes invoices and researches discrepancies for Scrap Marketing transactions. The IC will apply acquired knowledge of the automated systems and Scrap Marketing activity to resolve simple and complex problems.
This position operates within defined parameters. The primary goal of this position is to achieve excellence in all facets of the position. Providing the highest quality product safely, effectively and efficiently decreases accidents and errors and increase profits.

Interpersonal Contacts:
Personal contact within the company consists of communicating with operations and brokerage departments for transactional coordination and system maintenance.
Job Conditions:
General office environment in non-natural light setting. Time pressures at times for month-end and year-end processing, meeting deadlines and short notice requests. Attendance is critical during the first two weeks of the month and during year-end processing. Some overtime may be required to complete assigned tasks.
Physical Activities Required to Perform Essential Functions:
Example: Ability to: lift and carry up to 20 pounds occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently; sit for extended periods of time, up to 6-8 hours per day; write by hand and keyboard for extended periods of time, up to 6-8 hours per day; assemble papers, paper punch, staple, file; apply sufficient force to open and close file drawers. Ability to communicate both by phone and in person continuously. Communication is primarily by phone, email and sometimes in person, with other departments within the Schnitzer Group. Visual acuity needed for close detail work, preparing and analyzing data figures, accounting, and computer use.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED. Basic accounting courses and 1-2 years prior accounts payable or transactional processing experience. Experience working in a medium to large corporation with exposure to highly-matrixed organization. Competency with 10-key, computer printer. This position requires possession of a valid drivers license and the ability to drive an automobile.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word software. Detail oriented with good mathematical and communication skills. Tactfulness for dealing with vendors and other company employees.
