Urban Planner develops land-use plans for the beneficial development of urban areas. Requires a bachelor's degree in a related field and 2-4 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Urban Design Planner (Planner)

  • Full-time position available with the City Planning & Development Department, Long Range Planning & Preservation Division located at 414 E. 12th St.

    Salary Range: $4,619-$6,928/Month

    Normal Work Days/Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.*Telework available 1 day per week after completion of 6-month probationary period.

    Responsibilities

    • Collaborates with the division staff on urban design and historic preservation projects providing guidance and recommendations utilizing an urban design skill set.
    • Reviews proposed changes to properties in historic districts and presents to the historic preservation commission.
    • Performs historic resource surveys and section 106 reviews.
    • Prepares design sketches, renderings, models, and graphics for presentations and design guidelines that illustrate the city's goals of placemaking, walkability, sustainability, resilience, urban design, and planning.
    • Manages projects relating to the preservation and quality design goals of the City's comprehensive plan. Updates and creates new historic district guidelines and new development guidelines and illustrations.
    • Assists with the updating of the 18 area plans based on the new comprehensive plan.
    • Updates design guidelines and reviewing development proposals and capital improvements projects.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

    REQUIRES an accredited Bachelor's degree in geography, land surveying, engineering, planning, urban studies, landscape architecture or architecture; OR an equivalent combination of qualifying education and experience in one or more of the above disciplines. Preference given for an accredited degree in architecture or landscape architecture and previous experience in creating illustrations, renderings, and models.

Unless otherwise specified, an accredited degree must be obtained from a college or university listed with the U.S. Department of Education and recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education.

    For positions with a salary grade of EX6 or higher that require an accredited degree, qualifying professional experience must be obtained AFTER the accredited degree is obtained.

    Successful completion of a pre-employment criminal history/background check is required for all positions. Some positions require a post offer drug screen and/or physical.

    If appointed, non-residents must obtain residency inside Kansas City, Missouri's city limits within nine months.
