Position: Transportation Manager

SUMMARY: This position is responsible for overseeing and optimizing the transportation system. This position requires a strategic mindset to envision long-term transportation solutions, coupled with the ability to analyze a range of data points to make informed and impactful decisions, ensuring safe and efficient student transportation.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Develops, communicates, and implements a strategic plan for the department that aligns with the district's educational goals, emphasizing safety, efficiency, and continuous improvement.

Fosters effective communication and collaboration with various stakeholders, including school administrators, parents, community members, and transportation staff.

Implements initiatives that drive process improvement and operational excellence. Lead and guide the team through evolving transportation industry trends, technologies, and best practices.

Monitors and optimizes the efficiency of transportation routes, schedules, and resources.
- Oversees the implementation of turn-by-turn electronic navigation, bus pass integration, and other technological advancements to streamline operations.

Makes informed and strategic decisions that align with the district's transportation goals and objectives. Evaluates the risks, benefits, and potential impacts before implementing changes.

Conducts oneself in the best interest of students, in accordance with the highest traditions of public education and in support of the District’s mission.

Oversees the global network of all regular and special needs bus routes, schedules and stops in accordance with District policy and Idaho law. Ensures efficiency of time and vehicles throughout the system.

Establishes methods, processes, and procedures for the School Bus Routers.

Collaborates with district’s contractor to ensure route sequencing maximizes efficient and cost-effective travel paths according to established student time on bus criteria.

Provides route info to schools and audits routes for accuracy.

Inspects routing staff methods and practices for quality control, efficiencies, and optimization.

Serves as department routing liaison to the public. Receives and follows up on complaints and issues while recommending corrective action to bring resolution.

Identifies training needs and provides training for School Bus Routers, internal staff, and school administration in the use of routing software.

Oversees ongoing support of the district’s routing software.

Ensures data integrity by maintaining accurate and complete records.

Adjusts routes in response to program needs, student transportation attendance, student enrollment, roadwork, and parent/school concerns. Communicates with Impacted drivers, school personnel, students, and families.

Monitors municipal road improvement and construction schedule and adjust routes accordingly.

Assists in the preparation and execution of the route bid process.

Maintains effective working relationships with other members of the department as well as other school personnel and community members.

Maintains and ensures confidentiality.

Assumes responsibility for his or her continuing professional growth and development by attendance at professional meetings, membership in professional organizations, enrollment in advanced courses, and by reading professional journals and other publications.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma/GED, required

Bachelor of Business or related field, preferred

Five years of experience in management, preferred

Experience overseeing contracts and vendor relationships withing the transportation industry, preferred
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

Knowledge of a variety of computer software applications in word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation software

Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate with a diverse audience

Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with internal and external partners

Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to keep track of detailed information and data

COMMUNICATION SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to read, analyze and interpret governmental regulations, financial reports and legal documents. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, managers, employees, clients, customers, and/or the general public.

Demonstrate sound judgment by taking appropriate actions regarding questionable findings or concerns.
PRODUCTIVITY/EFFICIENCY SKILLS: Consistently demonstrate ability to respond to changing situations in a flexible manner in order to meet current needs, such as reprioritizing work as necessary; organize job functions and work area to be able to effectively complete varied assignments within established time frame.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral and diagram form. Ability to define problems collects data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with severe abstract and concrete variables.
