JOB SUMMARY:
The Director of Transportation supports Shelton School District's Strategic Plan through the overall management of the transportation operations for Shelton School District. The Director of Transportation also oversees the overall management of Pioneer and Southside School Districts.
MININUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Knowledge of or ability to quickly learn safety standards, laws, codes, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures relating to pupil transportation.
- Knowledge of or ability to quickly learn personnel supervision, routing and scheduling, bus driver training, accident investigation, bus maintenance, inventory control, cost accounting, and preparation of bus specifications.
- Four years' experience in pupil transportation (preferred, not required).
- Bachelors degree (preferred, not required).
- Completion of pupil Transportation Management Training (preferred, not required).
- Possession of or willingness to obtain a Washington State Commercial Driver's License, with a Class A or B and passenger endorsements with no air brake restrictions.
- Possession of or willingness to obtain a First Aid/CPR Card.
- Ability and willingness to work flexible hours.
- Proficient skills in Microsoft Office including Word, Outlook, and Excel.
- Possession of excellent communication skills including active listening, two-way communication, and the use of the appropriate communication channels.
- Possession of leadership skills that allow for positive, effective change in the Transportation Department.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with the transportation community through collaboration, teamwork, and leadership.
- Communicates openly and frequently with the staff, students, families, and the community.
- Fosters a safe, compassionate, caring environment that places the interest of students as the highest priority.
- Supervises vehicle maintenance operations, driver training operations, and route operations.
- Conducts drivers’ observations and evaluations as well as recruits and recommends hires for transportation staff.
- Promotes and practices professional growth and development.
- Establishes all regular bus routes, schedules, and stops including developing route maps for drivers, schools, etc., as appropriate.
- Monitors road and weather conditions and quickly assesses emergency situations to make recommendations relative to the safe transportation of students.
- Coordinates student transportation activities with school officials, department heads, law enforcement agencies, and other groups or individuals.
- Participates with school officials in family/student conferences in an effort to resolve or prevent misconduct and unsafe conditions which involve the transportation system.
- Develops school bus specifications which meet the needs of the district and fully comply with state and federal requirements.
- Recommends the procurement of additional or replacement buses and disposal of old or uneconomically repaired vehicles.
- Develops and forecasts transportation department budget requirements, administers the expenditure of allocated funds, and maintains cost accounting records.
- Collects data and develops all required bus transportation oriented reports and ensures submission on a timely basis.
- Ensures compliance with all applicable regulations, statutes, policies, and procedures related to pupil transportation.
- Plans, develops, implements, and conduct bus driver training and safety programs to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal standards.
- Supervises general maintenance program with specific attention to safety inspections.
- Establishes performance standards and supervises operational care, service, and maintenance of all vehicles within the department.
- Conducts accident investigations and supervises accident reporting to appropriate law enforcement and insurance agencies.
- Establishes and maintains a good public relations program designed to promote understanding of and support for the district’s transportation programs.
- Responds positively to suggestion for professional improvement; able to modify own behaviors on the basis of self-appraisal.
- Attends meetings and trainings as appropriate or directed.
- Performs other duties as assigned or appropriate.

SCHEDULE:
M-F, 260 days per year (inclusive of paid holidays), 8 hours per day.
SALARY:
$118,323 - $136,070, annually depending on experience. Salary change to $124,239 - $142,873, annually beginning September 1, 2024.
