Transportation Director directs, develops, and implements overall operations of a transportation network including safety, compliance, equipment, and staff. Develops and directs operational policies and procedures to ensure safety and efficiency in all transportation activities. Being a Transportation Director monitors transportation costs, service level agreements, and performance metrics to identify and resolve problems and achieve efficiencies. Partners with internal and external stakeholders to forecast and meet capacity needs. Additionally, Transportation Director oversees the acquisition and oversight of transportation providers. Requires a bachelor's degree in logistics, transportation, supply chain management, or equivalent. Typically reports to top management. The Transportation Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be a Transportation Director typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments.     Primary Job Function:

    The Reynoldsburg City Schools’ Director of Transportation will plan, organize, and supervise all operations of the Transportation Department to assure the safe, timely, and efficient movement of students. In addition, the Transportation Director will see that there is effective repair and maintenance of all transportation equipment and hauling services.

     

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • High School diploma or its equivalent
    • Five (5) years’ experience in the transportation industry
    • Three (3) years’ experience in the school transportation industry
    • CDL license with school bus and passenger endorsements

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's degree
    • Administrative experience 

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Primary functions may include the following duties, responsibilities, skills, abilities, and other characteristics.     Leadership

    • Responsible for the development of a long-range strategic plan for the Transportation department
    • Direct the daily operations of the Transportation Department by monitoring and evaluating the transportation operations for safety and operational efficiency
    • Establish and maintain Department timelines; make adjustments in Department activities in response to student and District needs
    • Interview and select employees
    • Manage Ohio Department of Education driver compliance:
      • T-8 compliance
      • T-10 compliance
      • Drug screen schedule and compliance
    • Supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff
    • Collaborate with Human Resources on labor issues affecting the Transportation Department

     

    Communication and Support

    • Provide quality service to students, parents, schools and public
    • Provide consultation and technical assistance to parents, school sites, administration and others regarding district transportation functions
    • Direct activities to assure proper and timely resolution of transportation and related scheduling and routing issues, complaints and conflicts
      • This will include information on school boundaries
      • Bell time changes
    • Work with enrollment to determine if a student is impractical for transportation according to Ohio Pupil Transportation Operation and safety guidelines
    • Work closely with the Union providing best practices information for negotiations
    • Monitor Department’s compliance with federal, state and local laws regarding transportation
    • Support where needed:
      • Drive a bus
      • Be a mechanic
      • Drive a school van

     

    Budget and Finance

    • Responsible for managing all of the Transportation Department budget
    • Assure adequate resources to meet District transportation needs
    • Input and process payroll for all Transportation Department employees including ESC employees
    • Process purchase order requests and payments
    • Responsible for reporting T-1 and T-2 financial data to Ohio Department of Education
    • Supervise the fleet maintenance plan for all buses to assure the safe transportation of students, school staff, and general public
    • Develop the bus replacement plan and collaborate with the District Financial Officer to assure buses are replaced according to State guidelines

    • Knowledge of safety standards, laws, codes, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures relating to pupil transportation
    • Knowledge of the principles and practices of pupil transportation planning, scheduling and route development
    • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of vehicle maintenance and related safety and legal standards
    • Knowledge of, and ability to, transmit safe driving and preventative maintenance practices
    • Knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision of staff
    • Skilled in effective listening and communication
    • Skilled at presenting information professionally, concisely, and effectively, both verbally and in writing
    • Skilled at providing sound judgment
    • Skilled at attending to detail and the highest level
    • Skills in organization, time management, task prioritization and recordkeeping
    • Ability to plan, organize, and oversee assigned work programs, including monitoring work schedules and work performance
    • Ability to understand the integration of special needs students into a school setting
    • Ability to operate school bus and district vehicles
    • Ability to provide transportation staff with in-service/professional development opportunities to increase proficiency in their fields of expertise
    • Ability to work well under pressure and use sound judgment, including appropriate handling of confidential matters
    • Ability to provide guidance and direction to staff and promote a team environment
    • Ability to facilitate and promote conflict resolution
    • Ability to interact positively and effectively with, students, staff, and administrators
    • Ability to use computers and/or electronic equipment to fulfill job functions

     

    Physical Demands & Working Conditions:

    • Physical Demands – While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate with others. The employee is required to sit or stand and move around for extended periods of time. While performing the duties of this job the employee must be able to push, pull, lift and carry over 25 pounds on occasion.
    • Working Conditions – The employee in this position may experience occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids and tissue. The employee may also be required to interact with unruly children.
    • Driving Requirement – This position may require driving.
