  • Technical Assistant for the Automotive Technology – NACTC General Duties:To assist the teacher in providing a well-organized, smoothly functioning class environment in which students can take full advantage of the instructional program and available resource materials. Reports to:Director of Newport Area Career & Technical Center Qualifications: Graduation from high school or high school equivalency certificate. Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certificate desirable. Be of good character Have a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma Completion of a Teacher Assistant Pre-Employment Training Program approved by the RI Department of Education (RIDE). Three (3) exceptions to this particular qualification: Those hired before January 1, 1999 Those with certification as a TA in another state, Those with an associate degree or bachelor degree AND who have completed coursework or other training consistent with the teacher assistant program standards. Meet one (1) of the following requirements: Successfully pass the ParaPro Assessment. OR Complete at least 2 years of study at an institution of higher education OR Obtain an associates or higher degree. Standards and indicators identify the knowledge and skills that must be covered in a RIDE approved Teacher Assistant Training Program. Those who hold an associate’s degree or higher and have completed coursework or other training that covers the knowledge and skills as listed in RIDE TA Standards may be exempt from taking the pre-employment training class. Met a rigorous standard of quality and can demonstrate through a formal state or local academic assessment: knowledge and ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics; or reading, writing, and mathematics readiness. Minimum of four (4) years of successful experience in automotive repair preferred. Experience acquired through either secondary or post-secondary training at an accredited institution, or apprentice training from work-related experience in automotive technology. Ability to establish professional rapport with students and teachers. Must be prepared to demonstrate a proficiency in current skills and knowledge of automotive repair. Demonstrated ability to perform the responsibilities below as evidenced by course work, previous experience, and the interview process (must-take test). To assist with materials, teacher-directed activities, and. operation of shop equipment. To work with students in the auto mechanics program under the teacher's supervision. To provide career awareness activities for Grades 7 through 12. To collaboratively plan NACTC visits and work site visits for the students participating in the career awareness activities to provide school-to-school support. Perform all other duties as assigned by the teacher and/or Director of Newport Area Career & Technical Center. Mental/Physical Requirements: Walking, Stooping, Reaching, Talking, Lifting (50 lb. Minimum), Handling, Hearing, Standing, Kneeling, Carrying, Fingering, Seeing, Pulling, Turning, Sitting, Feeling, Color Vision, Grasping Working Conditions: Work primarily Inside; Hot, Dry, Dusty, Noisy, Adequate ventilation; Mechanical hazards; Exposure to burns; Working around/with others; Adequate lighting; Working alone Terms of Employment: In accordance with the appropriate contract for support personnel. Pay Grade 5. Ten month position, 30 hours per week; 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m, with ½ hour non-paid lunch break. Continuation of position subject to refunding.
