    Job Objectives

    Administers a comprehensive health service program designed to help students achieve maximum benefit from the 

    district’s educational programs and services.


    Note: Legal restrictions prohibit the diagnosis and/or treatment of individuals beyond the evaluation of symptoms and

     administering emergency first aid.  Parents/guardians are encouraged to take students with suspected health concerns to

     a physician or other medical provider for follow-up services.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Valid Ohio school nurse license.
    • Meets all mandated health requirements (e.g., a negative tuberculosis test, etc.).
    • Documented evidence of a clear criminal record.
    • Demonstrates extensive knowledge of normal growth and development.
    • Demonstrates the ability to access pharmacology information and community health resources appropriate to the needs of students.
    • Training in physical and behavioral management techniques.
    • Basic typing skills.  Word processing and software knowledge is desirable.
    • Self-directed and able to learn required skills for the position.
    • Record keeping skills and the ability to apply basic mathematical concepts

    Responsibilities and Essential Functions: The following duties are representative of performance expectations. A reasonable qualification can be made to enable a qualified individual with a disability to perform essential functions.

    • Acknowledges clinic visitors.  Answers questions.  Refers inquiries requiring policy interpretation to administrative staff. 
    • Consults with district administrators regarding student health protective services.  Helps identify safety and health hazards.  Investigates and documents injuries.  Recommends policy revisions based upon professional guidelines and standards.
    • Answers the clinic telephone.  Directs calls based on the nature of the inquiry.  Takes messages.  Manages calls efficiently to keep telephone lines open.
    • Types routine correspondence and other office documents.  Duplicates and collates materials. 
    • Prepares special mailings for district-wide health program activities.  
    • Prepares requisitions and distributes medical supplies.  Maintains inventory records and monitors budget expenditures as directed. 
    • Serves as the district’s blood borne pathogen compliance officer.
    • Responds promptly to calls for assistance with sick or injured students.  Notifies parents or guardians as directed. 
    • Processes parent consent for administration of medication forms.  Compares completed consent forms with medication labels to identify discrepancies. 
    • Prepares the clinic.  Sets up equipment.  Requisitions essential supplies.  Promotes the proper use and care of school property.  Oversees the cleaning, repair, and replacement of clinic equipment.  Ensures that equipment is stored properly.
    • Administers medications.  Seeks advice when expectations are unclear.  Keeps all medications locked in a secure cabinet. 
    • Develops procedures to ensure that all medicines are stored safely.  Regularly re-evaluates district procedures for dispensing medications.
    • Determines the immunization status of all students.  Ensures that signed permission forms for the release of information are on file.  
    • Collects and maintains student health records (i.e., immunization status, medical histories, etc.).  Safeguards confidential medical informtaion relesased to district staff.
    • Provides assistance to sick and injured students.  Administers first aid.
    • Maintains high standards for student conduct.  Upholds the student conduct code.
    • Coordinates the Hepatits B immunization program.
    • Makes exclusion or readmission recommendations regarding students with communicable diseases or other health concerns.
    • Performs all required state minimum screening activities (e.g., vision, hearing, posture, head lice, etc.).
    • Assists with the kindergarten-screening program.
    • Instructs teachers in the early identification of students’ health risks.  Evaluates suspected medical, visual, or hearing problems.  Consults with parents as needed (e.g., telephone calls, conferences, etc.).  Makes medical referrals.
    • Reviews completed medical emergency authorization forms.  Communicates information to staff when required to protect students’ health and/or well-being.
    • Prepares student files and medical reports (i.e., census data, conty/state health department, intervention assistance teams, pupil services, etc.)
    • Trains staff assigned to provide assistance to students (e.g., first aid, dispensing medication, tube feeding, suctioning, catheterization, etc.).
    • Collaborates with teachers.  Shares knowledge and resources that enhance the educational process.
    • Participates in curriculum planning and makes health/wellness presentations.
    • Maintains accurate records.  Supervises the preparation of clinical records to ensure accuracy.  Submits reports on time.
    • Effectively uses support personnel to address student concerns (e.g., excessive absences, at-risk behavior, mental/physical health, family/peer relations, etc.).
    • Makes a referral to the student assistance team when a need is indicated.  Works with team members to reach a consensus on a plan to address student concerns.
    • Maintains a working relationship with community health resources (e.g., mental health services, health care facilities, rehabilitation programs, etc.).
    • Takes precautions to ensure student safety.  Does not leave students unsupervised.
    • Participates in after-school programs (e.g., open houses, etc.) as directed.
    • Participates in professional growth opportunities to remain current with health service innovations.





    Other Duties and Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

    • Upholds board policies and follows administrative procedures.
    • Promotes a favorable image of the school district.
    • Respects personal privacy.  Maintains the confidentiality of privileged information.
    • Reports evidence of suspected child abuse as required by law.
    • Takes precautions to ensure student safety.  Does not leave students unsupervised.  Reports unauthorized persons or suspicious circumstances immediately.
    • Supervises non-classroom activities when assigned.
    • Complete required training by appropriate deadlines (Vector, Gifted, Science of Reading, etc.)
    • Accepts responsibility for personal decisions and conduct.  Strives to develop rapport and serve as a positive role model for others.
    • Performs other specific job-related duties as directed.

    • Travels to meetings and work assignments.

    (Additional) Working Conditions: Exposure to the following situations may range from remote to frequent, depending on circumstances and factors that are not predictable.

    • Potential for exposure to blood borne pathogens and communicable diseases.
    • Potential for interaction with disruptive and/or unruly individuals.
    • Exposure to adverse weather conditions and seasonal temperature extremes.
    • Duties may require operating and/or riding in a vehicle.
    • Duties may require detailed paperwork.
    • Duties may require dispensing medications.
    • Duties may require exposure to cleaning solvents, air borne particulates, and odors.
    • Duties may require wearing protective clothing and using safety equipment.
    • Duties may require working under time constraints to meet deadlines.
    • Duties may require working during the evening and/or weekend.

    Supervisory Responsibilities

    Under the direction of the director of special education: plans meaningful work assignments, provides

    instructions, and communicates expectations to assigned staff.  Monitors and helps assigned staff

    successfully accomplish delegated duties.
