Safety Director directs, develops, and oversees the general health and safety policies and procedures of the organization. Ensures the workplace is in compliance with OSHA and other state, local, or industry specific regulations and that periodic safety audits are conducted. Being a Safety Director provides programs that ensure a safe workplace including safety orientations, skill training, emergency preparedness, proper job instruction, hazardous material disposal procedures, and the use of protective equipment. Develops a systemic process to collect data and analyze the causes of accidents and generate required reporting. Additionally, Safety Director implements initiatives to reduce and prevent accidents, occupational illnesses, and exposure to long-term health hazards. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to top management. The Safety Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. The Texas School Safety Center (TxSSC) is an official university-level research center at Texas State University. The TxSSC is tasked in Chapter 37 of the Texas Education Code and the Governor’s Homeland Security Strategic Plan with key school safety initiatives and mandates. The TxSSC serves as the clearinghouse for the dissemination of safety and security information through research, training, and technical assistance for K-12 schools and junior colleges throughout the state of Texas. As a result, Texas has become a national leader in school safety practices and is relied upon for assistance and guidance from jurisdictions throughout the nation.
The TxSSC welcomes applicants for the position of Associate Director of School Safety Readiness who have extensive leadership and supervisory experience within an organization that serves at the local, state, or federal level. This position will be responsible for effectively implementing and overseeing the statewide review of multi-hazard emergency operations plans for all school districts, open-enrollment charter districts and junior community colleges in Texas. This position will also be responsible for effectively implementing and overseeing the statewide data collection and reporting of safety and security audit data for all school districts, open-enrollment charter districts and junior community colleges in Texas. Further, this position will be responsible for effectively implementing and overseeing the Texas School Safety and Security Consultant Registry and other duties as assigned to this leadership role for the TxSSC.
