General Summary: As part of the Conservation Education Department, the educator will be responsible for presenting education programs to all types of Zoo audiences, in person and virtually. This position will develop program content and deliver educational experiences. Maintains appropriate animal handling level required for program presentation. Ensures all programs presented are engaging, effective, and in direct support of the mission of The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore. This position requires scheduled weekend and weekday duties with some supervisory duties in the absence of a manager.
Conservation Education Mission: To offer authentic, accessible learning experiences that spark curiosity, foster empathy for wildlife, and grow a diverse community of conservation advocates.
Essential Functions
Primary Function:- Delivers educational programs through the use of artifacts, animals, and hands-on activities, in person or virtually, on grounds or in the community;
- Supports development of education program content for diverse audiences including young children, families, seniors, and adult visitors, including those with special needs;
- Supports other Zoo departments with creation and delivery of education content for Zoo events and other activities;
- Completes all components of program delivery, including set-up, presentation, and tear-down;
- Competent in using presentation technology such as cameras, microphones, webinar platforms, and tablets;
- Maintains animal handling skills and first-aid as defined by Animal Handling Guidelines;
- Supports overall administration of education programs;
- Maintains education supplies and materials;
- Works with other Zoo staff to create and lead teen volunteer activities, including hands-on, outdoor projects;
- Supports zoo volunteers, including supervision in absence of a manager;
- Works regularly scheduled weekends;
- Communicates effectively and professionally with participants of all ages, Zoo staff and volunteers;
- Understands and follows all safety procedures as defined by the Zoo, AZA and other relevant regulating organizations;
- Develops and maintains professional peer contacts at partner organizations in order to be current with informal education practices and conservation education;
- Delivers extraordinary customer service to all Zoo guests and customers;
- In absence of education manager may be required to assume managerial duties;
- Perform other duties as assigned; and,
- Adhere to all policies and procedures of the Zoo.
- Participates in continuing education opportunities to improve upon content knowledge and teaching and presentation skills;
- Presents educational programs using Animal Ambassadors, games and activities, biofacts and artifacts in a variety of settings including on-grounds, events, classrooms, community programs, and virtual platforms;
- Works effectively with Zoo’s volunteer department on scheduling of volunteers for program support; and
- Works effectively with the Zoo’s marketing department on promotion of programs.
- Proven team member skills.
Education:- Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Environmental Sciences, Education, or related discipline required.
- Animal handling experience preferred but training is provided;
- Teaching and/or public speaking experience;
- Curriculum development in an informal setting preferred; and
- Working knowledge of Google and Windows programs.
- Excellent oral communication skills; and,
- Self-motivated and detail oriented.
- Must be able to operate a variety of machines and equipment including computer, telephone, scanner, copier, fax, two-way radio, golf cart, vehicles, hand tools, gardening/carpentry tools, computer, cash register and/or a computer based point of sale system, etc.
- Standing (up to 8 hours per day), walking (6 hours per day), sitting (up to 8 hours per day);
- Must be able to walk large areas of the Zoo as needed;
- Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force to lift, push, pull, carry, or otherwise move objects;
- Ability to use senses to monitor animal health;
- Must be able to work for extended periods of time in an outdoor weather environment, in all seasons and weather, including heat/humidity, cold temperatures, and/or wet conditions;
- Daily contact with plants and animals including being subject to bites, stings and scrapes;
- Ability to travel (car/van) as needed - locally and/or state-wide;
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, which will include working weekends, evenings, holidays, and special events;
- Ability to drive golf cart and large cargo van with appropriate license; and,
- Clean background check and driving record.
