SkoCode Computer Science AmeriCorps Member
  • Indigitize
  • Ridge, SD PART_TIME
  • Our goal is to engage Indigenous youth in Computer Science education to catalyze positive change within their communities through technology. We provide students access to the skills and knowledge they need to strengthen their communities using CS.

We believe providing Indigenous students with hands-on experience in emerging technologies is crucial for preparing them for future leadership roles in their communities. Unfortunately, there are not enough educational pathways for native youth to meaningfully engage with technology and computer science (CS). As an example, roughly only 20% of high schools on reservations offer a foundational computer science class, which we would like to change. Indigitize is a program that launched to expand access to computer science for Indigenous youth. SkoCode (Let’s Go Code) is the AmeriCorps program supported by Indigitize that aims to achieve that goal. SkoCode AmeriCorps members are trained by our curriculum team to provide high-quality, culturally-relevant computer science learning activities to K-12 students. Members are placed at one of our partner sites, typically in schools or supporting out of school time programs (ex. Boys and Girls Club) accomplish this. You will prepare, and then present these activities to different student groups throughout your week. This position requires roughly 30 hours of service per week throughout a term of service. Members will receive regular ongoing training to support their service throughout the term, in addition to receive professional computer science credentials through AWS without cost. Positions are currently available in New Mexico(Gallup, Albuquerque, Espanola, Laguna) South Dakota (Rosebud, Pine Ridge, Rapid City) & Arizona(Window Rock, Chinle) our July 2024 cohort.

As a SkoCode member you will build relationships with community partners to get stuendents excited about computer science. We’ll provide you with tools, training, and support to do so. SkoCode members will be placed at a designated partner site throughout the communities we serve, such as schools, afterschool programs, with non profits, and at regional CS related events. Members will be expected to present high-quality, culturally-relevant computer science learning experiences for young people using material provided by our curriculum team through Code.org, AIedu, Amazon Future Engineers, Skratch, CodeAcademy for programming languages, spheros, and more.

Members will also be responsible for capturing program impact through tracking student participation and administering surveys after lessons.

This position requires in person service about 30 hours a week for about 9.5 months.

    Benefits for a SkoCode Member:

    • Living Allowance (Distributed bi-monthly)
    • Segal Education Award: $5,176.50 (Upon successful completion of your AmeriCorps term of service)
