    Job Summary

    UT Southwestern is in search of a skilled and experienced Power Plant Operator I. Works under close supervision to perform semi-skilled level operation and maintenance of equipment and machinery in central plant environment.

    Work Location: Plant Operations, Dallas Campus

    Work Schedule: 3 x 12-hour day shifts and 4 hours either on the first or last day for a total of 40 hours per week. Plant Operators can be on-call during emergencies, or to cover another shift, inclement weather, and the like. The shift coverage could be for day or night.

    Skills Preferred: Candidates with previous experience as a Power Plant Operator in a Thermal Energy Plant. Prefer education in power plant technology and bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or electrical engineering; active CFC and/or EIT certification. Experience in electrical, plumbing, controls, and welding.

    Skills Required: Knowledge in boiler operations and steam systems; knowledge in chiller operations, HVAC, and refrigeration; knowledge in cooling tower and pump operations and other industrial rotating equipment; water treatment; building automation systems and computer literacy.

    Minimum Experience and Education Qualifications

    • Requires graduation from high school, vocational school, or GED.
    • Requires two (2) years semi-skilled level experience in operation and maintenance of mechanical, electrical, or industrial equipment.
    • Prefer vocational training in Power Plant Technology and/or bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and/or electrical engineering.
    • Prefer completion of certified operator program and experience in university physical plant environment.

    Job Duties

    • Starts up, shuts down, and adjusts power plant and/or chilling station equipment or systems in accordance with established operational and safety procedures.
    • Monitors equipment and maintains records of equipment operational status.
    • Cleans and maintains equipment and work areas.
    • Operates control computer systems.
    • Performs detailed inspections of operating equipment for proper operation.
    • Inform appropriate personnel of unusual conditions, problems, or deficiencies.
    • Identifies and reports safety hazards and equipment malfunctions.
    • Attends meetings and training courses.
    • Trains new personnel as required.
    • May perform preventative or corrective maintenance tasks incidental to operation of mechanical or electrical systems.
    • May complete work orders using automated maintenance program systems.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

    • Work requires the ability to plan and perform unusual and difficult assignments and needs to make decisions involving use of considerable ingenuity, initiative, and/or judgment.
    • Work requires alertness and close attention to detail to avoid injury to self and others.
    • Work requires proficiency in all phases of work performed.
    • Work requires walking, bending, climbing, lifting to 50 lbs., pulling/pushing equipment up to 50 lbs.
    • Work requires computer literacy.
    • Familiarity with Boiler Operations and steam systems.
    • Familiarity with Chiller Operations, HVAC, and refrigeration.
    • Familiarity with Cooling Tower and Pump Operations and other industrial rotating equipment.
    • Familiarity with Water Treatment.
    • Familiarity with Building Automation systems.

    Working Conditions

    • Working conditions are considered acceptable but occasionally involve exposure to one or more disagreeable elements such as dust, dirt, and the need to work frequently in confined spaces.
    • Exposure to mechanical and electrical hazards typical to central plants, and utility distribution systems.

    Any qualifications to be considered as equivalents in lieu of stated minimum require prior approval of Vice President for Human Resources Administration or his/her designee.

    This position is security-sensitive and subject to Texas Education Code §51.215, which authorizes UT Southwestern to obtain criminal history record information.
