Polysomnographic Technician under the direction of a physician, administers various sleep studies in order to diagnose the type and extent of sleep disorders. Performs routine patient assessments, scores sleep records, documents other test results, and collects and transmits biological specimens for analysis. Being a Polysomnographic Technician typically requires an associate degree or its equivalent and certification as a Polysomnographic Technician. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager.     Job Summary

    A Polysomnographic Trainee develops competency in and performs the basics of polysomnographic testing and associated interventions under direct supervision of a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist. Initiates and conducts cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (BLS).

    Job Description

    Under direct supervision of a RPSGT conducts Polysomnographic procedures

    • Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT), Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT), and parasomnias studies etc., to ensure collection of appropriate data. May assist with in the delivery of oxygen therapy and/or PAP therapy for training.
    • Follows “lights out” procedures to establish and document baseline values (such as body position, SpO2, respiratory and heart rates, etc.)
    • Perform Polysomnographic data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure signals are artifact-free. Identify and report signal abnormalities.
    • Document routine observations, including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedure, and other significant events in order to facilitate scoring and interpretation of Polysomnographic results.
    • Assist with appropriate interventions (including actions necessary for patient safety and therapeutic intervention).
    • Follow “lights on” procedures to verify integrity of collected data and complete the data collection process (e.g. repeats the physiological and instrument calibrations and instructs the patient on completing questionnaires, etc.).

    Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide age specific care in the treatment, assessment, and education of pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.

    Interacts with internal and external customers using AIDET methodology.

    Under direct supervision of a RPSGT, gathers and analyzes patient information.

    • Verify the medical order and protocol.
    • Complete and verify documentation.

    Explain the procedure and orient the patient to the sleep center.

    Under direct supervision of a RPSGT conducts pre-testing procedures

    • Prepare and calibrate equipment required for testing to determine proper functioning.
    • Apply electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standards.
    • Perform appropriate physiologic calibrations to ensure proper signals.

    Perform routine positive airway pressure (PAP) mask fitting.

    If RRT or CRT, performs the duties of a registered or certified respiratory therapist (if RRT or CRT) as the workload demands.

    • Uses proper communications channels, maintains confidentially of customer information and protected healthcare information, (PHI)
    • Ensures completion of annual competencies.
    • Stays up to date with Health System information by reviewing written and electronic communications from various sectors of the System.

    Works within and as a member of the Sleep Disorders Team but is able to function independently when necessary.

    Performs other duties as assigned.

    Education, Credentials, Licenses

    High school diploma or GED plus 6 months of direct patient care experience or 1 year of postsecondary education OR current enrollment in an accredited educational program leading to an associate degree with an emphasis in polysomnography. If the applicant is not a RPSGT upon employment, the Associate must become Registered by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists. Completion of the BRPT must be 36 months from start date. All RPSGTs must maintain their credential as described by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists. Failure to maintain the credential will result in a demotion to Polysomnographic Trainee until their credential is reinstated by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists.

    Specialized Knowledge

    CPR certified for basic life support.

    DESIRABLE

    Associate degree in science

    • Experience with EEG testing.
    • Experience with Sleep Disorder testing.

    Familiarity with microcomputers.

    Familiarity with Hospital Information Systems (HIS).
