Job Description Summary:
The Fisher College Police Department is seeking a Sergeant to support the overall mission of the College and to provide security and related public safety services for the protection of Fisher College, students, staff, and visitors and assets at the College.
The Police Sergeant supervises personnel of equal or lesser rank, performing varied and detailed duties in planning, assigning, and directing the activities of subordinates. The Sergeant monitors and evaluates the performance of subordinates and provides written documentation meeting the requirements of Fisher College’s formal evaluation process.
Generally working under the supervision of the Administrative Lieutenant, the Sergeant shall have immediate control of the personnel under their command and shall be held strictly accountable for their efficiency, effectiveness, discipline, appearance, and overall conduct to ensure appropriate enforcement and compliance with the General Laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the policies, procedures, and regulations of Fisher College, consistent with the interests of protecting the lives and property of the members of the Fisher College community. In absence of any superior officer, the Sergeant shall assume complete charge of the department until otherwise relieved by a higher authority.
The Sergeant must be able to work any shift, during all weather conditions, including nights, weekends, and overtime as assigned. Officers work a “five days on, two days off” schedule.
This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) under the Clery Act, which is an individual to which students and employees should report criminal offenses or who has significant responsibility for student and campus activities. A CSA shall report all allegations of Clery Act crimes they receive to the Public Safety Department, so they may be investigated and published in the College’s Annual Security and Fire Report. Description of Duties and Responsibilities:
The statement below describes the principal duties of the Sergeant and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties and responsibilities:
- Maintains total familiarity with all applicable laws and the policies and procedures of the Fisher College Police Department and with the rules and regulations of Fisher College. Shall assist and instruct personnel under their command in the proper performance of their duties, giving special attention to new officers serving in the department or reassigned to a new shift.
- Responsible for maintaining records, logs, and files; reports in writing to a superior officer any cases of misconduct, incompetence, neglect of duty, or violation of Fisher College rules and regulations or Fisher College Police Department policies and procedures on the part of such personnel.
- Responsible for patrolling the campus regularly in addition to visiting with each person assigned to their shift as often as practical to ensure efficient and effective performance.
- Reviews and signs written reports submitted by subordinates, accepting responsibility for the completeness, correctness, and accuracy thereof.
- Responds to or provides back-up assistance on all potential disturbances and emergency calls.
- Act as a resource for Officers and Public Safety Officers under their immediate supervision and provides guidance to other supervisors as it relates to staff responsibilities as may be assigned.
- Identifies the need to follow up written incident reports by coordinating follow up investigations with the initial officer or others.
- Investigates and documents all accidents in which on-duty members of the Fisher College Police Department are involved.
- Actively involved in carrying out Crime Prevention and Community Policing programs.
- Acts as a member of the supervisory and management team of the Fisher College Police Department and as such is expected to devote themselves to promoting the fulfillment of the mission and values of the Fisher College Department among those they supervise and serve.
- Provides first responder medical assistance and directs advanced medical personnel as necessary.
- Renders assistance to those in need and has the knowledge and ability to make referrals to available campus resources as applicable.
- Authors well written and highly detailed incidents reports.
- Demonstrates the ability to analyze emergency situations and quickly develop incident action plans to mitigate such incidents.
- Works in collaboration with the Dean of Students office when incidents are referred for judicial considerations.
- Provides information to the general public and community members while promoting positive police community relations.
- Works closely with municipal police and fire agencies, as well as local public in the interest of fostering a cooperative and coordinated effort in matters of campus safety and security.
- Works closely with the community in an effort to enhance public safety at Fisher College, with specific emphasis on crime prevention and awareness.
- Participates in ongoing professional development program to include all training activities i.e. on the job and in service training initiatives.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required Minimum Qualifications:
- Associate Degree in criminal justice or related field.
- Graduate of a full-time police academy certified by the Massachusetts Police Training Council; or a Special State Police Officer Academy offered by the Massachusetts State Police or, an approved Part-Time Intermittent Academy and successful completion of any required Bridge Academy.
- Basic police firearms instruction and qualification course and/or recent requalification.
- Highly efficient oral and written communications skills.
- Applicants must be at least twenty-one (21) years old at time of application.
- Must possess and maintain a Massachusetts Class A Large Capacity License to Carry Firearms.
- All candidates must have a valid Massachusetts Class D operator’s license at time of appointment.
- Must possess and maintain First responder and CPR certifications.
- Must possess the ability to work in all types of weather conditions, shift assignments, and holiday.
- Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Knowledge of problem-solving methods and ability to become familiar with the operating procedures of various Fisher College departments such as Residence Life, Student Affairs, IT, Facilities and others with whom constant interaction is required.
- Strong technology skills in the use of the Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS), alarm access control and monitoring system, as well as proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

- Candidates should display comfort and expertise working in a highly diverse, multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment.
- Must be in good mental and physical condition.
- Candidates are subject to psychological evaluations and drug testing, and fitness for duty examinations as may from time to time be prescribed by the Chief of Police or their designee
Preferred Qualifications:
- Minimum of three years of experience as a full time POST certified law enforcement officer in Massachusetts.
- Graduate of a full time Massachusetts Municipal, Special State Police Officer, or State police academy.
Candidate Selection and Certification Overview:
- Must provide three written letters of reference.
- All candidates must obtain certification as a law enforcement officer by the Massachusetts Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Commission. In addition to POST certification, all candidates must obtain their warrant of appointment as a Special State Police Officer (SSPO).
- Fisher College Police will work with candidates to facilitate any necessary MPTC academy training, POST certification, and SSPO appointment.
- All officer will be required to complete Field Training and Performance Appraisal before officers will be able to work on their own.
- Candidate applications will be screened to ensure minimum qualification have been met. If those qualifications have been met, the candidate will be notified provided information on the initial interview and hiring process.
- Candidates who accept an initial interview and who achieve a favorable assessment will advance to a second interview conducted by the Chief and/or Administrative Lieutenant.
- Candidates who achieve a favorable assessment will advance to the next process which is a thorough and complete background investigation as required by POST, in consultation with the MPTC and Massachusetts State Police Certification Unit, to determine the candidates’ good moral character.
- Any prior convictions for a felony, whose name is listed in the national decertification index or database, or untruthfulness are automatic disqualifiers for employment.
Please note, any applicants who have not graduated from a full-time police academy certified by the Massachusetts Police Training Council; or a Special State Police Officer Academy offered by the Massachusetts State Police or, an approved Part-Time Intermittent Academy and successful completion of any required Bridge Academy, will not be considered for this position.
