Police Patrol Officer is responsible for patrolling an assigned area to prevent and discover crime and to enforce regulations. Responsible for responding to calls, taking necessary action at the scene of crime or disturbance, conducting investigations, making arrests, testifying in court, and completing reports/forms and routine paperwork. Being a Police Patrol Officer requires an associate degree in criminal justice and/or additional certifications and at least 12 to 18 months of law enforcement experience. Requires Firearms Certification. Additionally, Police Patrol Officer typically reports to a police sergeant. The Police Patrol Officer works under moderate supervision. - Regularly checks businesses and residential areas
- Monitors radio broadcasts by Communications and other officers to ensure awareness of activities in area and to provide assistance.
- If needed; identifies, reports, and responds to suspicious activities or needs for service.
Initial Requirements
- Must be a resident citizen of the United States
- Must be at least 21 years old and not over 40 years of age
- Have never been arrested or charged with a felony that has not been expunged by a
court, even if charges were later dropped
- Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency (HSE) diploma
- Cannot have a misdemeanor conviction of domestic violence that has not been
expunged by a court, even if charges were later dropped
- Must have a valid driver’s license from their state of residence
- Fulfill the IC 36-8-4-2 Sec. 2 residence requirement (Live in Indiana upon start of
Academy)
- Must have adequate means of transportation into the jurisdiction served by the
member’s department
- Must maintain phone service to communicate with the department
- Have not been dishonorably discharged from the military
- Must pass a mandatory drug screening test
